This is a bit different to the direction I expected electric bikes to move in. What do you think?

'Pablo de Chaves wanted us to know about his latest work, something off in a different direction from previous efforts, he's gone over to the electric side and designed a naked bike with a very exposed mechanical and minimalist look. If the name Pablo de Chaves doesn't ring a bell immediately, you can look back at his other projects on The Kneeslider, the D1200R and the 599BL Moto2. Both of those use conventional internal combustion power, but with the DCH project it's all batteries and controllers.'

Although given the range issues with electric vehicles currently. A big square battery box instead of a full, aerodynamic fairing makes absolutely no sense.

There was an oppertunity to design a fairing which does not need to bulge out round an engine/exhaust system and does not need holes in to let air flow into an engine or over a radiator.

I thought the battery might have been removable so you could carry it into your house to charge.. but no.

It also has no mudguards and is therefore totally fucking useless as a motorcycle.

TL;DR. It's a pile of hipster bollocks.

On topic stinky's comments I have to agree with. It's style over substance. Although to be fair it's not trying to be a prototype or a grab-for-cash product placement. I'd be happy with myself and my metal bashing skills if I could knock something like that up at home.

To be fair, a battery and electric motor is not a particularly interesting or pleasing object, so it has no real need to be on show. It's just a big black box hanging in the breeze.

Style over substance seems to be in right now. Looks at the popularity of iPods Laughing

If enough people buy it despite the exorbitant price, maybe leccys might start becoming more mainstream, if only for the fact that people own them for their looks.

How cool would like look going sideways around a flat track course.

May run into issues in the rain I imagine. Cool

Very hideous looking imho but merely one of many electric concept bikes around at the moment. No doubt they will be more practical, with mudguards and everything else we'd expect on a bike, as the knowledge of how to make batteries smaller and lighter grows.Within five years I'd expect a cheaper, lighter and more traditional electric motorcycle to be offered for sale.

Old story about electric vehicles. Untill battery technology drastically increases and price drops they won't ever be viable unless you have the money to have one purely as a city car/bike.

That thing is ugly.

That is so wrong and stupid, I'd imagine an useable electric powered motorcycle as something with advanced aerodynamics with thin tires to reduce the rolling resistance. I see no point in fighting the air and rolling resistance when I've got reduced power and battery life.

I find it ironic the way they emphasis the fact it is a naked bike, why the hell don't they cover it up and put fairings on it?!

The mind boggles.

The minimalist design very much makes sense for a town commuter.
More weight=more power used.

It uses a hub motor which is nice and simple, but will put a good bit of the weight in the rear wheel, which will compromise handling.

It seems to be halfway between a cheap electric mountain bike and a motorbike, which is about where you'd want it.

I suspect those footpegs will be troublesome in the wet.

As ever, because there's very, very little difference between how electric bikes work and the electrical components are all 'off the shelf', they have to something weird with the style to make it seem all 'different'.

RhynoCZ:
An electric bike generally isn't a great idea for doing any distance at the moment.
So, I don't see that aerodynamics are really the way to go.
While, for around town they do make very good sense often; but weight not aerodynamics will have more affect on efficiency around town.

On bicycles, it's generally accepted that aerodynamics start to make a difference in terms of aerodynamic vs rolling drag at anything over 15mph.

I think you underestimate the difference a well designed, aerodynamic fairing would make to the range, top speed and efficiency of those vehicles.

Aye, Craig Vetter would have something to say about that.

They also add cost/weight.

I'm thinking for an in-town commute where maximum legal speed is 30mph for the most part and there's a lot of stopping and starting.
And so, as the extra cost (weight/price) of a fairing I suspect may be equal to the cost of an extra battery, which would have significant time savings in construction.

If I was going all out for efficiency, it'd have to be a recumbent - but the general concept quite scares me for in-town use.

On that - Craig Vetter is not riding around in town, with lots of start-stops. If you're in a town with steep hills, probably even more so.

Said it before and I'll say it again electric vehicles are going no where until they sort out the batteries. That bike be good in an art gallery not on the road.

I think you're plum wrong there in terms of weight to benefit but I'm not sure my maths is good enough to prove it either way so it's going to stay in the realms of supposition.. ?anyone?

I would have thought a motorcycle travelling at anything over 15mph with a fairing will be more efficient than a slightly lighter motorcycle without one. Hell it's in town. Enclose the front wheel too.

Ok, perhaps it would cost more in terms of money but if the person in the OP had spent his creative energies attaching his batteries and electronic controller gubbins to the inside of a fairing instead of a giant suitcase...

Hell. You could even go for a monocoque design if you were really pushing the boat out. So the fairing is a stressed member. Now THAT might be worth making a thread about. Give the GSF600 a run for its money in the resemblance to a teapot stakes.

EDIT: In fact. Someone needs to make the bike from Akira. Complete with hubless wheels so the rims are powered and can act as regenerative brakes. Perhaps an idea whos time has come?
