I was in my dad's car today (passenger), the sun was low in the sky, we came round a bend and met with some serious glare. My dad immediately put his left hand up to shield his eyes and I started to wonder how one would deal with that situation on a bike. Looking ahead normally I literally couldn't see the big van in front of us or the road surface.

Anyway, just wondered what people do in this situation and also if anyone has ever tried light sensitive visor inserts (like photo-reactive specs) and if so are they any good?

While we're on the subject: some other helmet accessories that could either be good or a bit crap. Opinions please:

Sunax sun visor insert

Breath deflectors

Cheers!

Light reactive inserts seem okay for me Smile.
Breath masks are great and make your helmet snug and warm, but they also make putting it on and taking it off a pain in the fecking arse!

I had a fog city hyper optic insert on my last lid. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up It was great, changed colour in about 10seconds from almost clear to dark. My new lid came with a free dark visor and swapping take the same 10seconds, so i havn't bothered with an insert on this lid.

Squint and move your head down to try and use the top of your lid as a sun visor.

Use your left hand to shield your eyes.

Slow down is usually a good bet. Thumbs Up

Personally, I've got three visors for my helmet - a clear one, a semi-tint and a dark one. Pick the right one for the journey when you can. Eg, I know that at certain times of year if I'm riding home from work I'll be going straight into a low sun, so it's time to use the dark one. Going out in the dark... clear one's usually a good bet. Wink

Of course, you can always just keep a pair of sunglasses under your seat and stick them on if it gets a bit glarey.

Yeah i get this every morning, come on to the same road, get glare of the nice shiny roads, my eyes watering and i try blink to stop it, what i normally do is tilt my head down, or to the side, usually works for me but not always, think i might try visor inserts, sounds like a good plan.

True enough. Although annoyingly, there is no space under my seat, it just lifts for access to the battery etc. doh! I was thinking of solutions that wouldn't require pulling over. I take your point about being prepared for the journey ahead though.

I have the Fog City Hyper Optic insert and I'm quite pleased with it. It doesn't go mega dark but dark enough. Thumbs Up

If the sun is setting, I ride with sun glasses on, I can take them off once it's getting properly dark, and they'll stop me from being blinded by the sun. Even then, going over a blind summit, off-camber, blind corner with the sun straight into your eyes isn't much fun, so I slowed down a lot for that one. If in doubt, slow down and try not to look at the sun, even if it happens to appear right where you are looking at the apex of the corner. Rolling Eyes

I wear a tinted/black visor 24/7. If I think I'm gonna be riding in the dark, then I'll bring along a clear one with me.

I was wearing a tinted visor yesterday, and a bmw traffic cop car seemed to show considerable interest in me, so much so, they did a u turn on a dual carriageway, mounting a small pavement in the process. I managed to sneak away from them and have a bit of a cat and mouse chase (hide then scamper along until I was spotted again)

Don't know whether it was because I wearing a black visor or because of my exhaust, but either way, if they fined me for either, I wouldn't stop using them. I consider both to aid my safety on the road in different ways.
