Hey guys,
The names Matthew i'm new to this as the topic suggests, i'm basically just after some insight to licenses needed for; age, cc, bhp etc., and if me, myself are qualified for the bike I would be getting once/if I hopefully pass the required credentials .
About me;
I am 20 years old atm and have been driving cars since i was 17, currently driving Audi A3 2.0 TDI SLINE my 3rd car ( also no crashes, claims or points ) and do quite alot of traveling. I have ridden bikes before although only off-road and only up to 250cc.
I was looking into getting a motorbike as a second vehicle for commuting the shorter journeys but motorway sometimes...
I was wondering also If the Honda Hornet 600cc would be a good first bike. (link listed below)
Quite a long-ish read with a few questions but any help is appreciated on these topics, thanks in advance .

Nope the hornet is not a option for you yet..
Because of your age you will only obtain a A2 licence, This means you will be restricted to 47bhp for two years or until you turn 24.
You can restrict pretty much every bike as long as it doesn't originally excide 93bhp. < That's the simple version anyways.
So if it looks really sporty chances are you can't have it also things like super motos can be off limits because there is a power to weight ratio.
So I would get your cbt done asap, get your theory test out of the way because they are both valid for two years. Get a 125cc jap bike, ride it until you have the confidence to go for your full licence.
If I was you I'd wait before doing your test, until the weather is a bit better. Because the tests can be cancelled due to extreme weather, its just a pain in the ass. ____________________ My opinion is neither copyrighted nor trademarked. If you like, I'll trade for one of yours.

The Motorcycle Test, Licence Categories & Age Restrictions
Follow link; explains licence catagories, ages for them; what you might ride if you get one.
Hornet? Yup, as said, model makes more than 90bhp as stock; and on A2 catagory, you might gain at 20 yrears old, you can only have something that might make 45bhp (ish give or take conversion roundings from metric to british). Bikes may be 'restricted' from something that makes more than 45bhp as standard, but restricted power-output cant be less than half brochure quoted 'standard'
ie dont get into the 'well, its a few years old, it wont have all the original power, and it only measures 78bhp at the back wheel according to magazine tests, so if I pick the most favourable numbers, I can get away with it... you wont Insurance Co will go by what Honda say in the brocure, end of. And they will be the ones that will put the dampers on before any-one else.
We did go round the houses over the Hornet specs though, and there is one specific model year; I think it's the 2001? that to the brochure is A2 restrictable; but bit of a mine-field; and you would have to be damn sure its that model year, by frame numbers, not number-plate!
Wouldn't reccomend one for a DAS newb anyway; legislation is there to direct you to the newby-twins; and there's good enough reasons for that; so just go with it. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

It's annoying about the Hornet, but there are decent restrictable alternatives like the CBF600, ER6, Bandit and many more. Anyway, horse before cart, get licensed.
Its more complicated than it used to be, but none of it is really that hard.
You'll need to do a bike theory test. It's exactly the same as the car theory except 5 or so of the questions are bike specific (and you don't even have to get those ones right). Might as well get that out of the way, a pass is good for 2 years.
CBT to validate your provisional entitlement. Should be no problem as you've both ridden and driven, use it as an opportunity to evaluate the instructors.
Then the A2 tests which in practice mean paying a training school for training and use of their bikes. Shop around, see if you get on with the instructors and don't rush to pay hundreds of pounds up front in return for good intentions.
The tests really are easy enough if you're confident. If you're fairly flexible on when you can sit them (the DSA tend to cancel at the first sign of inclement weather, because pussies) I wouldn't hang around, just get it done. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
