Haven't posted for a while because I've been bombing about on my mountain bike today, but I thought I'd share this video of my streetbike tommy impression!

I feel absolutely rough, but landing smack on your crown and cracking your helmet was good enough for me!

Anybody attempted a frontflip before?

You need to learn to tuck in and roll. Or hurdle the bars.

I am however at something of a loss as to how exactly you managed to do that in the first place. Unless that is a MUCH steeper hill than it looks, but you seemed to hit the ground pretty quick.

I've flipped over the front of my MTB many times but never going over a jump. I usually achieve it by either sticking the front wheel square into a rut/root where it stops dead or by bottling it at the last minute and grabbing a fistful of brake. I've also had a couple of pretty painful ones fucking up the pop-up onto a boardwalk.

Or was it a double hump and you stuck the front wheel in the dip?

I ride clipped in because I'm mostly a cross-country rider, but I've put longer travel forks - so my rig's more of an all-mountain/enduro rig.

My mate who was riding behind me, albeit on a hardtail, saw how steep the hill actually was - Strava had it at 10% gradient. So i carried way too much speed for that transition and overshot it by a good 2-3 ft.

As i hit the ramp, i pumped the bike up so it bought my back end a LOT higher than if i were to simply roll onto the table top. You can hear me compress the back end of the suspension and hear the hiss of the rebound.

All in all, a learning curve. Ambition outweighing skill and technique... which makes me just have absolute admiration and respect for those freeride bikers!

Definitely overrotated - The benefits of riding clipped in is that you can pump the rear quite a bit for air... in this case too much... Poor technique, too much speed, I WAS looking at my landing spot... just happened to be the case that I overshot it considerably. So pretty much froze up, didn't pull up on the bars.

It's weird though... Reactions work lightning quick at 50-90mph on the roads, yet doing 20mph, on a mountain bike, you're not geared to react!

I see the problem.

I've never ridden a bike with suspension offroad.

It would appear it can lead to epic fail like I always suspected.

I see no way this accident could have happened on a conventional framed bike. It could have lead to may other sorts of accident but absolutely not a front flip.

I ride a rigid 29"er and I would have had a choice of either landing on my nuts on the crossbar while hitting my face with the headset, staying with it for a while then lowsiding or looping backwards, landing flat on my back, then being hit in the face by a bicycle.

Oh, I ride clipped in too so whilst I was able to compress the rear end and pull up, I wasn't quick enough with raising the front! Either way - 2 cracked ribs and a bruised pelvis later lol!

No, it was a case of not looking where you were intending to land (a lot further than what i was focusing on), the rear end was at the wrong attitude.

Ironically, this month's copy of mountain biking skills mag identified this as the buckaroo! If i weren't clipped in, I would have been clear of the bike as i went over the handlebars, rather than having the inertia of the bike causing me to continue rotating!

All I have to say is that my crashes are going to get a lot worse!

Dunno if it's the camera distorting it but the jump doesn't look anywhere near big or steep enough...

Fair play for trying though... I couldn't even bring myself to flip into a foam pit in Austria...
