Man struck by lightning whilst riding

I read this story of a guy struck by lightning, which blew off his visor and melted all the intercom wiring in his helmet:

I couldn't help thinking - was the intercom wiring in his helmet responsible for saving his life, or was it cause of him getting struck in the first place?

I suppose ideally you would take shelter during a thunderstorm as you don't have the faraday cage protection of a vehicle.
Wet tyres will give practically no insulating effect.

Not something I really thought about and have ridden through a few - when if walking it might have felt unsafe out in the open!

So he had a copper wire attached to the top of his head which was ionising the surrounding air by broadcasting radio waves. I can see why lightning would find that attractive.

Yet another reason to not wear an intercom.

Miss S had a horse struck by lightning a few years ago.
She says that was down to it having shoes on. And now swears by not having them on any of her horses. But has the conflicting view of whether or not to put them inside if there is a storm coming incase it strikes the stables and they can't get out.

Surely if the rider was hit it would have wiped out his electrics, as has been said before there is no Faraday cage on a bike.
