I'm being a grown up and buying a house. I've rented before, but I'm back home with the parents atm. 3 bed maisonette in the SE, gas central heating, all bills split 2 ways.

I've budgeted the following (monthly):

Mortgage £X
Electrickery £40*
Gas £40*
Internet/Phone/TV £30
TV license £12
Council tax £120
Water ??
Insurance ??

+Food, fuck knows how much I spend on food at the moment.

What are your outgoings - do these * look realistic?

You can look up your council tax payments online. Just find out your band and look on your council's web site. We pay £160 or so a month on a slightly bigger than average detached house in the SE. Utilities depend on usage but £100 combined sounds about right to me.

You appear to have missed out water & sewage bills and buildings & home contents insurance. Also, "maisonette" suggests leasehold to me, so there may be ground-rent and maintenance fees.

Yeah, lump the drink in with the food shop. Maybe if I'm pissed it will numb the pain of stripping wallpaper. Laughing

It's like £15 a year charge on a 900 year lease, so that's no problem.

I'm pretty sure I won't live to 900.

Mobile phone contract? buildings insurance?

Note regarding water - if there is only one or two of you and the house is not on a meter, ask for one to be installed. Much cheaper than standard rates.

Also factor in that you will only pay council tax for 10 out of the 12 months.

On a water meter I'm paying about £20/month. It was a lot more without the meter.

Insurance is only about £150/year for building & contents.

Gas and leccy look about right.

If you're renovating you will haemorrhage money - paint and wallpaper and stuff really adds up.

Another one to bear in mind is personal insurance. My mortgage requires me to have health, life and income protection insurance which adds about £50/month.

Yeah, gradual thing. It's liveable, just needs modernising. Has a garage though!

Don't know if it's on a meter.

Don't know if mine will. Speaking to the advisor later, will ask the question. Bloody hope not!

Really? Our mortgage-advisor tried to cross-sell us all of this but it wasn't a requirement for the loan itself. Check you haven't been mis-sold.

You can get one put in. It will probably work out to your financial benefit to do so.

Noooo... not at all. It really depends on the rates. I had a house in Chesham where they wanted to install one (supposedly they can on all change of ownership) turns out the bills would've gone up to nearly triple based on their estimates (2 people, no bath and low usage).

It's some silly calculation based on the rental value of the house in 1985, which means a lot of outer London houses are seriously undervalued - find out first, but I expect in the OPs case he should do all he can to keep the meter away from the property.

Rent £XXX
Electrickery £30
Gas £20
Internet/Phone/TV £25
TV license £12
Council tax £110
Water £35 (metered)
Insurance £12
Food £60-80 (varies)

Also consider:
Mobile phones
Car insurance/servicing
Bike insurance/servicing
Unforeseen bad shit

Mine^

That is for a 2 bed terrace, 2 people living in it. Bills is total, not 1/2 of total. Gas and elec are by DD, we don't use as much as the DD sends so periodically get refunded, we aren't especially frugal with our energy/water use and buy decent food/drink.

How much was the boat?

Whats the internet service like?

You can't take a car with you so if you need to get somewhere, you'd first have to sail/row/glide to your cars closest mooring place?

Sounds a good idea but I couldn't be too far from the bike/car etc.. other than that, fair play Laughing

Boat was £10.5k, and there's secure parking at the marina with 2 allocated spaces. Admittedly, when you go sailing you're walking at your destination. You could pick up a livable boat up for much less, depending on how much space you want.

Internet is ok, free wifi that is alright for streaming but you have to log in every 45 minutes which is a pain. Might get a mifi router for things like xbox.

Bills, petrol, food, household stuff cost me about £1200/month

That's for me wife, 2 kids, 1 car, 1 bike, mortgage, no loans.

I miss the days when I was renting a room (all bills included) for £250 and was spending less than £100 on food. Not possible now.

I live in a converted 3 bed house (made into 2 1 bed flats), the water bill for the house would have been about £560 a year, because it was split the cost for each flat was £560 a year.... after a bit of an argument with the water company they said about fitting a water meter which with charges etc would have worked out to about £540 a year (still for a 1 bed flat), add to that any leaks etc I would need to pay for the extra water use.

Luckily they checked the pipework and there is 3 properties running off a single supply, so the meter wasn't an option, so now I pay £34 per month on a reduced rate.

Now 2 streets away my ex and her 3 kids live in a 3 bed house and their water bill is about £320 a year Confused

We currently use £40-60 a month on electricity. However we're not at all careful with it. All of our appliances are electric and we're all on the computer all day. That's 3 of us.

Water we pay a fixed rate, so about 4 payments of £60.

Gas we opted for cash quarterly because we only run the central heating on it, so I haven't a clue about that yet.

Internet, about £25, no line rental as we don't use the phone.

Didn't bother with a TV Licence, we don't really watch it.

Council tax exempt.

We basically all put £15 a week in to a joint account together and pay the bills from that. So there's £180 in there a month. Working out alright so far.
