Hi all, i am looking for some winter gloves.

I have a few requirements:

Must be waterproof,
Must be resonably warm,
Must be able to fit over my jacket not under.
Must be no more than £50

Oh and i refuse to buy muffs.

Then you are foolish to think that cheap gloves that fit your criteria will keep you warm.

Muffs are the key part of last years winter riding, they are worth it. Who cares if you look a cunt, when driving in my warm toasty car, all you bikers braving the cold look like cunts Mr. Green

Why would you refuse to buy muffs?

The only reason I don't have muffs is I only use my bike in the winter for pleasure, so I bought a set of £20 Thinsulate textile gloves, I've been out in the snow and my hands haven't got cold.....but commuting everyday, I would buy muffs all day long

I've been in quite a few muffs, Lozzypops muff was warm and cavernous, but I think her muff is older so has slackened slightly, where as Reclusos muff was very warm and very tight, quite a squeeze to get your hand in Reclusos muff

Wink

And yes, muffs.
Correct budget, best solution to your requirements.
Go secondhand on the gloves if you massively stuck on a solution that will never really meet your requirements properly.

My commute is only 5 miles. So cheap waterproof/warmer than my summer gloves will be fine. Last year i rode all winter with my rst summer gloves and some thing silk liners which were just warm enough but they werent waterproof.

I appreciate that muffs are the best option but i dont want them.

Up your budget or cross out the waterproof gloves. Cheap non goretex waterproof gloves are nothing more then a bin liner to keep moisture out (and in).

You might or might not have this problem, but within 10 mins my hands stink...Like too much to go to work.

Normally people who worry about their appearance are clad in more expensive brand names, alpinestars is all over £100 Wink

5 miles is plenty of time to get gloves soaked.
Remember it's not just a case of rain and spray; add in the speed and it's equivalent to someone having a pressure washer pointed at your gloves for those five miles.
Which is why even £100 fancy-brand gloves can get soaked in 5 miles. Water will eventually get in through the seems etc.
You can get overmits that have less seams (and less flexible), which may be better.

Is it just the styling you don't like about he muffs?

I dont like the way muffs are attached to your bars, i like being able to have lots of movement around my hands and dont like the idea of them being inside something.... its difficult to explain.

Having never used muffs I always thought they're a sensible option if I ever motorway commuted etc...You've just turned me against them, unless they're really easy to take your hand off the bar I wouldn't use them Laughing

Same with most people who don't like the 'feel' of muffs to start with.
Most people get used to it and much prefer the warmth and dryness they offer once they've used them a few times in adverse conditions.

I didn't like the first few times I used them either.

I've had absolutely no problems getting hands in and out quickly, either on my Tucano Urbano neoprenes, or my DIY hairy-muffs.

They're just a superior solution, even for short trips.

Before someone recommends Spada Enforcers, let me chime in and say that they are shit.

Sweaty, non-waterproof, sweaty, bulky, sweaty, cold, sweaty shit.

Also - buy some muffs. Easy to take your hand in/out if you buy decent muffs. Crappy ones will be pseudo-virginal and will be too tight and flappy abouty, my tucanos are proper perennial gapers so I can fist them at speed without issue.

They wont fit inside the jacket as the cuffs are to tight.

You need muff, lots of muff. Nothing wrong with putting my hands in or out of them, can use everything as normal. Have used on various bikes and if I fix my TL tonight I'll be on it tomorrow with muffs fitted.

listen to us and you might learn something, all my jackets have adjustable cuffs and I can fit my gloves inside out out depending on the weather

https://www.jsaccessories.co.uk/gloves/winter/7009-camo-glove-black-white-silver.html

It says they're waterproof and have adjustable cuffs, only 30 squid.

I have these https://www.jsaccessories.co.uk/gloves/winter/h20133-aqua-tourino-glove-black.html that are only slightly out of ur budget and do a half decent job at keeping water out. On shorter journeys their good but not so good on longer journeys at keeping water out, should be fine for a 5mile commute.

In fact most of these gloves claim to be waterproof that are between £30-£50

I have waterproof gloves and I got caught in rain with my summer jacket where gloves where over the jacket.

Bad Idea!!!

Waterproof meant that it held all the water inside the glove and was absolutely horrible!

Sad

I rode through last winter in my summer gloves but the bike had hand guards, my new bike doesn't have hand guards and I've had to dig out my old winter gloves already.

I'd look at getting some hand guards if they will suit the look of your bike.

You need muff.

I rode around last winter with my hands wrist deep in muff with summer gloves on. This meant they were warm, waterproof (neoprene tucano ones) protected and i had plenty of feel Very Happy Did a ride from Northamptonshire to the Lake district like this and was plenty warm (had heated grips too!!)

They may look stupid, but the benefits outway this vastly because you will have toasty hands that actually work and not ice blocks!
