I don't post on here because I have been living in Australia for 12 or so years, so what you guys get up to bears no relaton to what I do these days etc, but I come here a lot because it's a bit of a taste of home.

One of the things that makes me smile a lot is reading about kittens being killed etc. (no I do not advocate cruelty to kittens, you know what I mean) as it's a phrase you don't really hear here.

Never has it been more poignant than today. On my commute in the morning there is a stretch of back roads that I go on where I can and do have a blast for a couple of minutes away from Mr Plod's prying eyes. I have done this every day for at least 6 years now, way over the speed limit but no entrances or exits to worry about, just the odd kangaroo at dawn or dusk, so limited risk I feel.

Anyway, this morning for some unknown reason I decided to take my time getting to work and just pootle along at the speed limit (80kmh), when out from nowhere ran a bloody ginger cat right in front of me. No chance whatsoever to avoid it, I hit it basically at the bottom of my radiator and then ran over it a fraction of a second later.

I'm totally gutted, make no mistake about it,and have been thinking about it all day so I don't want to sound mean, but I came to the conclusion that if I had been doing my usual speed through there I would have been long gone before the poor thing made it's ill fated dash.

It also seems evident that riding at the speed limit kills kittens, so i shan't be doing that again

It was ginger and any form of ginger is ok to run over and kill. Over here it is still one of out main sports.

I've often wondered if a dog or cat ran out on me how I would react and if it would knock me off or whatever. There's loads of bastard cats where I live, one ran out on me the other day whilst in the car, straight under then just ran off!

My ancient bike is a magnet for cats. There's something about the seat they love. They also like to sleep in its shadow when the sun is out. It's true the toms piss all over my back wheel. But they're cats, I'm sure they don't have some kind of conspiracy on the go

Having said that, someone bastard did once put a small kitten in my top box. Wondered what all the noise was when I got home. Opened said box. There was flea riddled bloody thing looking up at me with big eyes. Frightened. Alone but for the old shite I keep in the box.

Took it out the back and drowned it. Which is to say, sat it down and fed it Whiskas till it nearly burst. Now we can't get shot of the bugger.
