Took the crap flags up from the front of the house, spread 5 ton of top soil in their place and am now ready for the green stuff. Should I put seed down or is it too late? Turf is about £150 to put down myself, but seed will be about £30. Plus seed you just throw around, but turf takes a bit more effort and I will have to order it so it will be next week before I could lay it, but seed can go down tomorrow.

Going by the time of year and temperatures etc, it might be best to just pay the extra for the turf, you'll get instant results, and won't have to look at a patch of soil for several months.

I always prefer seeding though as I feel the results can be better if done right.... but this time of year I think you would be lucky to have anything resembling a lawn before spring

Grass will grow from seed if he temperature is around 7 degrees or more. If it is colder, it will stay dormant and grow in the spring.

So it depends where you live and whether you need the grass now.

I'm in the North West so not too cold at the moment. Not too bothered if it isn't a lush lawn within two weeks, but don't want to waste money. Money is measured in time too. If I get a greenish fuzz before the winter kicks in that would be fine, just want to make sure seed would actually grow and not just sit there.

Is there a way to kick seed into action before I spread it on the garden?

It's a while since I looked into this but I ended up with turf. Our back was gravelled cos the previous owners were old and couldn't care for grass. But the gravel had gone to shit and looked like crap. So I got two blokes into fuck it all off, and another guy came with soil, and then turfed it. This was the summer of 2006 iirc. It was hot as fuck and I had to water it at night. Nearly all died.

Seed won't germinate unless it's beneath the surface apparently. It can't just lie on top. Check this but that's what I was told iirc. So that makes it a bit more difficult. Also will need rolling either before or after.

Anyway, regardless, I honestly don't think you've chosen the best part of the year for seed. Even if you don't get frost, you're probably going to get more rain which might wash seed away or just waterlog it. So I'm going with turf, definitely. In spring I think seed would be best because apparently it makes for a better lawn. But not now, with winter more or less here.

Yes I know I could have picked a better time, but I was time short, or at least quality time as I'm sure that the neighbours wouldn't have liked me digging up the front at 2am in the morning.
The more I think about it the more it looks like turf.

Astroturf. No need to water it. No need to mow it. Just hoover it every now and again.

Turfed my lawn this year and I was very pleased with it. You'd have to be mad to seed this time of year, it's too cold for it to establish and the wet weather means mud in the house 'till late spring. Turf will still take root and won't get eaten by the birds.

seeding at this time of year isn't a good idea unless you don't mind feeding the local birds & rodents

I seeded a small section of border I removed about 2 weeks ago. I wasn't bothered if it grew or not before spring, it's doing well.

Another thought, you can walk on the turf straight away, the seed bed would need keeping off until it's well established.

Along with the OP, I've been delayed due to other commitments and have been in a similar quandary to him.
As has been said, turf will give instant results but it will require more preparation and installation time. The advantage of seeding, for me, is simplicity and I already have the seed (I don't know how or where it came from).
So tomorrow afternoon, I shall be sowing my seed and will have to put up with any resulting mess.
BTW, Skudd, if you do decide to use turf, be aware that it needs to be laid green side up.

If you want quality use seed, if you want quick results turf but in either case leave it until spring.
Seed is not the cheap option, you need to did and sieve the soil, feed it a lot of compost and sharp sand for drainage at level it off well before sowing but it will give you the best results.

Except slugs or something will eat most of it, really seed would be unlikely to grow except in the very mildest parts of the country until about March at earliest - seed is very much cheaper so it would be a good way to do it if you can wait until the ground dries up next April

But temps have dropped in the past fortnight. It's a good few degrees colder now.

I made a wicked electric sieve when I was prepping my lawn. I bolted an electric motor to the front of a shopping trolley which I lined with rabbit hutch mesh wire. I welded a big nut to the flywheel on the motor and turned the shopping trolley into a giant vibrating sieve. Shoveled the dirt in the top and it fell through the mesh leaving a bucketful of stones in the trolley, which I tipped out of the back flap into a wheelbarrow. Sieved the whole garden in a few hours.

BTW forget using a roller to level a garden for turfing. All you do is make bumps in the ground. I used a 6x3" timber with a make-shift handle both ends and thumped the dirt flat, using a rake to screen it and fill in the dips.
