I've been reading around for weeks now but I'm an indecisive bell end. Basically I have done my CBT and currently ride a scooter (sorry Sad ). but I want to move on and buy a geared bike. I'm 20 years old and at some point in the future want a sports bike, now I'm thinking at some point within the next year I want to pass my full test...

Right, so I've been probably most interested in the r125 and the cbr125... I know they're ridiculously expensive for what they are but they do at least have a good resale value for when I pass my test.

I'm interested to hear some opinion's on what I should do.

Cheers.

Most people including me will tell you not to buy an r125 or similar bike. Especially new as your wasting money.

If your planning on doing your test soon I would advise get yourself a CG125 or similar bike. Pretty nippy, will let you get used to geared riding and cheap to buy, insure and WILL sell for what you buy it for. Win win Smile

Just grab yourself a CG, get some practise in and do your test ASAP. Then spend your cash buying the lovely sports bike you actually want instead of some over priced sad 125 version of it Which you will lose money on

I'd say go have a sit on a CBR125, just get a second hand one 05/06 plate that's been relatively looked after and you'll be fine.

Should hold it's value too so once you've passed your tests you can get rid nice and easy,

They are quite small though, but coming from a scooter I'm sure you'd prefer it..

Thumbs Up

Thanks for your replies.

I've had a go on a cg125 before actually, they're really nice bikes to ride but I don't like the look of them so much, I'm definitely the odd one out there though. Yeah, the older model CBR's are very skinny and small and don't look half as good as the newer models but they're also about a grand cheaper second hand, so that might be my best bet. From what I've read of CBR's though they struggle for speed, even for a 125.

Cg is no looker but if your only keeping it short term as a stepping stone for a post licence bike then does it really matter?

I would just advise to not waste money on the 125, keep that for your next bike

If you can buy one and not lose money then there's nothing wrong with a cb whatever, just check the resale on the model you buy. Obviously newer will depreciate quicker

If you're 20 and can afford to spunk a load of money on an R125 that will depreciate immediately, you'd be better off doing A2 and getting a big boy's 47bhp bike.

If you MUST get a 125, and you definitely shouldn't, get an NSR.

Fair enough. I do agree with you. I'm gonna look to get my A2 done as soon as possible.

Starting with my theory... Thumbs Up

I just figured buying a 125 would be good practice, better than lessons which are also stupidly expensive.

It would be good practise, but it's still practise so you want it as cheap as possible. If it costs a fortune you might as well get more lessons

I just got a cbr after my Cbt on a 50. My first geared bike so can't really compare to others but I think its a good bike. Feels quick when accelerating but I bet it won't in two weeks time Wink

Quick update... I'm probably going to be buying a CG 125 on Tuesday, I'm gonna give it a quick test ride first but it looks in pretty good condition. I actually think they look pretty nice now, especially the older models. As long as it gets me from A to B comfortably it doesn't matter.. and I'm sure it's going to be reliable.

I've also got my theory test booked for Thursday so hopefully I'll be booking my mod 1 soon. Smile

I appreciate all the advice.

If you can find a good Honda CG, IF you can find one - a lot of them are abused and clapped-out - they're great little bikes, but I do agree they aren't very attractive. Of all the 125cc bikes I would like to own the CG isn't really on my list.

It depends what you can afford and what you need the bike for. If you want cheap, practical everyday transport then you buy a commuter bike like the CG, if you want a weekend toy and you have some cash to spare, you buy a sports 125 or classic 125 - 2-strokes are popular as classic bikes.

You are not allowed to buy a yzfr125 or a CBR or a new bike, in fact your not even supposed to get a second hand one. The only bikes you're allowed are twenty year old CGs. It always good to see a scooterist apologise though. Smile

2 stroke sport bikes are underrated, they can teach you a LOT when it comes to fast cornering and smooth fast riding. If you don't push you won't learn though...And not everyone wants to ride fast which is fair enough.

From the sounds of it you're clearly mature enough to get a big bike anyway. Good luck on the theory and Mod 1 Thumbs Up

What about a Thumpstar Road Ripper 125

(Also wondering myself if that would be a decent first bike?)
