 Posted: 17:39 - 24 Oct 2013 Post subject: GSXR SRAD 600 Clutch Problem |
 |
|
Hi, I've been having issues with the clutch on the SRAD.
It all started one day when the clutch cable stretched, then snapped. So I had to ride home approximately 5 miles with no clutch. So I was clutchless shifting the whole way, trying to time the lights etc. But ultimately, I still had to sometimes stall to a stop and start it in gear.
All said and done, got it home, new cable in, and off I go, however, the gears were sticky and struggling to find neutral. So i adjust the clutch. This is where I think I may have made the first mistake. I may have over adjusted it so that it wasn't disengaging fully. It only seemed to cause a problem when the engine got warm. So I rode for a few weeks.
Then I tried to re-adjust, and i stripped the screw in the actuator mechanism. So new actuator fitted, and I adjusted it with plenty of play etc and it disengaged fine. Oil was also changed at this point.
Then it stood for a while. (1.5 months?)
Now when i started riding again, all was good for a few weeks. One day i felt the clutch lever "go" as such, then it became stiff, and wouldn't disengage properly. The next day, all is well until the engine gets warm, then I am stuck with the same issue of gears being sticky and not being able to find neutral.
Sometimes i can find neutral if i'm coasting slowy, put pressure on the gear shift, and slowly find the biting point. Then it just clicks into neutral.
So overall, is this a fubar'd clutch? |

get a manual and adjust the clutch as per manual
some bikes are a bit particular to adjustment
if no good after adjustment I reckon your steal plates are stuffed
my tl1000 had the same symptoms and it was the steals |

My clutch on the GSXR was a PITA.
The actual worm gear was dry and it ended up falling to bits.
I bet if you remove the front sprocket cover and undo the worm gear, its going to shit itself all over the place.
Replace it,like £40 or something then set it up as per the guide. |

I've replaced the actuator. Well I thought it was called an actuator, but as it turns out, its a worm gear lol. Just to be sure I googled the part number, and yes, I replaced that part, because that's what I initially thought it was.
So it was working fine for a bit after that but its just messed up again after. Maybe I'm gonna have to adjust it again properly to see if it happens again.
So if not, its the steel plates then? |

Right, well, there have been developments.
Today, whilst riding (the gear changing issue is still there), the clutch cable snapped AGAIN!
This was a brand new cable! I got it off ebay, and it was new, but not sure if I got a shitty cable, but it snapped right at the handle, as if it came apart from the end metal bob thing.
if you refer to my original post, I mentioned that the problem occured after i felt the new cable "go" and then get stiff. I'm thinking that this was the cable stretching/fraying.
Now, if I get a new clutch (from Suzuki this time), do you think this is likely to solve the clutch issue. Do you think the whole thing was caused by this damaged cable which was just on its way out? |

get a genuine one and start from scratch again
part number 58200-33E01 £28.71 from robinson foundry |
Seriously man, you're right. I learnt the hard way.
thing is, I can't wait for it to be posted. I broke down in Brixton, and had to leave it there over night. I'd be surprised if its still there in the morning.
I swear to you, this is no word of a lie. I parked it up and was sat on it, waiting for the old man to pick me up in the cage. And some bloke cycled past, got stopped by these two other guys, and got robbed for his bike right in front of me. I moved from there quick, last thing i need is some fuckheads thinking "hey, lets rob his bike and keys off him" lol.
I'm gonna head down to Lamba Suzuki in carshalton first thing tomorrow, pick up a cable, then head down and fit it on the roadside.
Any ideas why it would have snapped? reckon it was a shitty cable or is there something about the handle etc that might be wearing the cable down? |

Lamba is a Yamaha dealership I think they stock parts for other bikes though. Sounds like you bought a cheap (Chinese?) low quality cable some eBay jobbies are ok if I were you I would definitely complain to the seller. ____________________ Honda CB-1, TS125X

you can ride a bike with no clutch cable you know
you have to bridge the clutch switch to start it though and start it in gear and go will go straight away
up the box as normal but coming down is a little trickier and its hard to try not stopping
anyway glad you have a clutch god knows whats caused your other one to snap without looking it can be hard to say but routing is important too |
