Driving home from college on Monday the old dog broke down. I was kick starting the bike and then the kick starter decided to snap and fall off.

I tried bumping it and after a good 5 minutes running up and down the road got it going after around 5 minutes it started back firing then it cut out completely whilst going along in gear the engine was turning but felt like no spark . I tried bumping it again and it wouldn't go so I left it chained up in carshalton.

Yesterday I picked it up in the van and brought it home seems like I'm getting a intermittent spark so I'm thinking this is why it isn't going.

Ive put a new kick start on it.

It's a points ignition engine unsure of the year as it's not the original engine.

So what do we think has gone wrong. I'm guessing the coil has broken down as it was running then not occasional bsck firing / poping

TL;DR: bike won't start dunno why

so you are capable of fitting a k/start mech....good.........and everything on the engine seems good, apart from intermitant spark at the plug??

long shot even on a cb pints ign bike, but has the flywheel key sheared..........check position of flywheel when piston at tdc on firing stroke, do the timing lines align??

you have the tools to remove the flywheel i presume so could do it that way, and check all stuff under the flywheel. prior to doing this, are the points opening??

Hi mate not mechanism the actual kick start has snapped I'm qualified in motorcycle maintenance and repair upto level 2 and I'm in my last year now (level 3) I'm quite certain it's the coil and haven't tested it yet was just seeing if anyone else has come across this before since I don't get a lot of time to tinker these days

flywheel mag on this bike?????

quick test to see if points open when they are supposed to......

or are they opening at the wrong time due to sheared flywheel key.........

odd ball i know but wait till you come across a honda stationery engine, which checks out all ok, good spark even, but the little gem still refuses to start, as the f/wheel key has sheared.

make a mental note of that one cos at some time in your carrerr your gunna come across it. :D 8o) :karma:

Haha thank you for the advice I check the oil every time I fill the tank (once every 2 weeks or so)

As most have said, check that the points are opening at the right time. When were they last looked at? Could be time to replace along with the condenser.
