So the issue I have is that my CB500 battery isnt charging.
Happenned first s couple weeks ag, after using the bike went to start it up and it just couldn't tick over. Bump started it, used it like that for two days and it resolved itself and was normal.
Was ok for a week, but now it is not charging again, so can ride for an hour and turn.off and it won't start. Also when using indicators they flash like crazy. Been push starting it when need to use it but aint touched it for a week.
What do you think is t he problem. Could ut be the reg/rec?
I dont have the equip to test anything.[/quote] ____________________ "Calamity - A more than commonly plain & unmistakable reminder that the affairs of this life are not of our own ordering."

The rectifier/regulator will normally be situated somewhere where the airflow will be useful for dissipating the heat given off by the unit.
On a friends Triumph TT600 the unit was behind a seat sidepanel. This was probably why it overheated and the connectors became contaminated.
Edit. If you had the manual it would make working on the bike a lot easier.

Gonna try again tomorrow, but any tips?

To bump start a bike on your own takes a bit of practice. You need to get on the LH side of the bike, get the bike into 2nd or 3rd gear. Turn ignition on, pull in the clutch and run with the bike till you get a bit of speed up then jump, side saddle, onto the bike and, the instant you hit the saddle, let the clutch out. As soon as the bike fires up, pull the clutch back in and pull up gently. The first time you do this, watch out the bike doesn't fall over to the right. I've seen that happen a few times. If you're not confident doing it side saddle, and are a bit athletic, try jumping on the bike astride it instead. I find you lose too much momentum doing it that way though.
If this proves tricky, find some kind soul(s), and ask them to give you a push. Same routine as above except you sit astride the bike from the off and, just before you let the clutch out to start the bike, stand up on the pegs and drop onto the saddle while letting go of the clutch. The idea of the jumping down onto the saddle is to stop the rear wheel from slipping rather than turning the engine over.
Alternatively, find a good sized hill and push the bike there then bump the bike as you're going down it at a good speed. This is my favorite method but it has it's downside - if you get to the bottom of the hill and the bike hasn't started, you may have to push it back up there
I happen to live on top of the only hill in Cambridge................ which is nice.
There's always a tow home if you can't get it going and know someone with a bike willing to help. ____________________ Space Is Deep |

Thanks guys some top advice. I managed to bump start it home during lunch...And I was revving the bollocks off it the whole time to stop stop it cutting out
I think the fact that it wasnt pissing it down today helped stop the wheel slipping during start.
I have not got round to testing it w/ multimeter yet.
So now that I have it at home do you suggest replacing battery first before testing?
Also I have seen some cheap reg/recs on eBay - Not looking to trust them but would this do:

yeah - if you use the link I gave ya at the top of the page - print out and take it with you to test with - just follow the instructions - proper handy guide! Charge the battery up though - you'll get mixed readings with a dead battery |

Sorry to revive thread - but can someone confirm that the reg/rec I linked to above is decent enough to get. If not please link to one I can buy today.
Real lazy with getting it sorted out yet and the cold weather hasn't motivated me much.
Thanks!
EDIT: Reg/Rec replacement sorted it ____________________ "Calamity - A more than commonly plain & unmistakable reminder that the affairs of this life are not of our own ordering."

I had the same issue with the Reg/Rec on my CB500 when I bought it 3 months ago, the battery wasn't getting charged and was depleting itself when the main headlight was turned on. The rectifier was surely fried and needed replacing.
https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=3705184&highlight=#3705184
I bought a MOSFET type rectifier from off of an S1000RR from some breakers in Germany, found them doing a search on eBay. The rectifier is made Shindengen and has the model code FH020AA. Basically these are the rectifiers to buy if you want reliability, the Shunt-type OEM ones on Hondas and many other bikes are notoriously unreliable and fail after a period of time.
You can buy a kit from the States to replace yours and comes with some crimp connectors (buy a good crimper tool ) to replace the connector block that your old rectifier uses.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/YAMAHA-SHINDENGEN-FH020AA-REGULATOR-W-CONNECTORS-REPLACES-FH012AA-/380705241034?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item58a3ccf7ca
Or you could search for rectifiers from bikes that have Shindengen ones fitted as standard. These included the later 07- R1's, S1000RR and CBR1000RR/CBR600RR from the past few years. Double check before purchase to make sure you get the correct model of rectifier. You can use spade connectors to make the connection or you can do what I did (for the input at least) and use 1/2 of this triumph link lead which has the necessary waterproof connector block already attached. For the battery output I just used the spades I freed from the old connector block and put them straight onto the output terminals.
This mod has proven to be totally reliable so far and I have had no troubles with my electricity supply. The only trouble I had was getting the much larger rectifier to fit under the side panel, it did go in but at and odd angle and with only one bolt holding it in place and I did have to angle grind off the old hanger for the cable block to make the entire area flat with not obstruction for the connector blocks. ____________________ Honda CB500s (1999) - Honda CG 125 BR-J (1991)
