I want a new watch, I like the Tissot T Race style watches but they are fooooking expensive. Any ideas on that sort of style at a reasonable price?

Or anywhere where I can get last years/older model Tissot's for a lower price?

It's in the price range of 'fashion watch', you're not going to get a decent price pre-christmas. Last years models pop up, make sure you figure out the model number and google should be your friend.

If you want to go up slightly in price and get a watch that may retain value try www.bonhams.com or one of the other auction houses.

I've got one of these Argos do half price on them occasionally, I wear mine to work and my last watch lasted about three days before I smashed the face glass. No point in me getting a decent watch, got it covered for three years against loss theft damage for about a tenner too. Depends if you want the brand or not, I'd love one but doesn't make sense to me. This one still tells the time Thumbs Up

Google tells me £300 to £540 ballpark.
That's not expensive.
However, it's only a quartz movement. They actually cost pennies.
So you are paying a lot for the style and the name.

That said it's about the ballpark price for that type/brand.
The Tissot name itself isn't that prestigious.

There are lots of chronograph styles.
FWIW I have a few of Christopher Ward watches.
These started out as reasonably priced but they are creeping up and up. I only tend to look now when they have offers/sale. If £300 is outside your budget then the CW ones will probably be too. Although there is a C7 for £300.

I also have a liking for Citizen watches. Not as prestigious but they do exactly what it says on the tin. The Eco-Drive is a good idea but they can still go wrong (may take 5+ years though). However, easily fixed for not many pennies by watch repairer by replacing a capacitor thingy.

Seiko are another brand I like. However, Pulsar is also a Seiko brand that often uses the same movements and styles (discontinued/old Seiko). For example this.

HTH Thumbs Up

Even the swiss mechanical movements only cost a few €s and they tend to be made by the same small group. I believe Tag Heuer buys in most of it's movements.

You're always paying for the brand & style...

I believe that Tag Heuer have started making their own mechanical movements.
This is due to the SWATCH group limiting supply of the movements.

Tag Heuer always rile me with their marketing and using Steve McQueen images. As in Steve McQueen wore a Tag Heuer. No he didn't. He never did. He was dead before Tag took over Heuer. Back then the name Heuer meant something. Now IMHO it's just another fashion label tag.

The quartz movements are only make by a few companies worldwide.

If you want to go mechanical for a cheapist price have a look at Alpha Watches (order via Hong Kong). Chinese movements but among the best mechanical everyday wear watches I have. Their returns/repair under warranty is also good (as long as you decypher Chinese to English email) when one of mine was FUBAR. They do quartz chronos too - like this (in a style similar to Tissot - many watches can be a similar style/homage Wink ).

Heh, my Tag Heuer is the STeve McQueen ltd edition Wink

I realise it's a bit of a crock, but I bought it at auction and just by getting it into the EU I made about £500 on the thing.

I have a few watches (mostly fashion ones), but rarely wear them as I work on a keyboard all day and they get in the way. They are very useful in business though - there's always someone at a meeting who appreciates a nice watch and it creates a talking point. Plus, I bought my Tag as a bit of an investment... you can spend £500 on a watch and it's worth barely £100 resale, or £1500+ and it retains a resale value.

S'funny, as much as I like watches, I haven't worn one for about 6 months. From where I'm sitting, there's the time on the PC, one on the desk phone, one on my mobile, one on the clock on the wall, one on each of the all/server stat monitors on the wall.

When in the car, it's on the dashboard.

When at home, it's on a ship's clock, and the DVD player.

Kinda having a "don't care what the time is, I'll sleep when it's dark, and wake when I need a piss" phase Smile

I prefer to buy a decent watch or two that will keep its value, more of an investment, the Omega watches are holding used prices well and I managed to sell a three year old model for almost the same as I bought it for, have a look at the Oris range for a budget high end watch that won't lose you money perhaps, a tissot, as others have said, is purely a 'fashion' watch.
You could also consider a pre-owned high quality watch (just ensure its verified and has all necessary paperwork associated)

I wanted an Omega Seamaster but I couldn't bring myself to spend that sort of cash on a watch. So I bought a Citizen Ecodrive that was quite nice. Fast-forward a year and I cracked and bought an Omega Seamaster.

In short, buy a watch that's not the one you want and you'll regret not buying the watch you want.

I agree but be very, very careful as IMHO way too many fakes/homage watches out there. When you can buy boxes and paperwork from eBay for the likes of Rolex, Omega, Breitling, Patek Philippe, etc. it can be a bit of a nightmare.

Thank fuck there's others who realise this and feel the same.

If you want mechanical, the look but not the price, try a parnis on ebay, or a Seiko.
Glycine are a decent German brand that uses the eta movement for decent prices.

I like the look of the Citizen Primo. That's the style of watch I like, kind of half smart with a hint of colour

Look up Vostok-Europe watches. I've always liked their stuff but I'm not sure of many or even any UK suppliers. I suppose that makes them uber-exclusive in Blighty.

Those look awesome, a bit pricy but maybe something I will treat myself to in the future. Thanks for that!

Yes, I thought that. I have one of their watches when they started out (as FEW, then some legal malarkey and they had to change).

I was thinking about revisiting as they've expanded the range. Was thinking of a 200m diver style for me and a pink or purple based chrono with sparkly shiny bits for the missus.

I like that you can make up something that looks like the Breitling for very little money. Of course it'd be a homage rather than a copy Wink That said at the moment the Rotary look alike is only £70 (although in certain light looks it) and excellent value for the Seiko homage at £125. Both from Argos (so other places will sell too). Now forcing urge to take out credit card, as I like the look of that Seiko and I'm not a big fan of chrono watches either Confused
