January is perfect snowboarding season. Go to Val D'isere/Tignes it's awesome.

Does she like the sights and/or shopping?
Long weekend to New York?
...it may be cheaper if you actually do that midweek (needs checking, weekend flights cost more last time I looked).

if your into skiing then the 3 valleys is quite good, any of the major resorts in europe are quite good to be fair,
if not then budapest in hungary is an awesome place, one of the best cities ive ever been, has cool thermal roman style baths, loads of history, cool buildings, cheap booze and food, and people are pretty friendly to boot,
flights are around 30-60quid per person and a hotel will set you back 25-50 quid for a 4 star hotel, per night

also the cheapest place to buy cigarettes in the eu, so if you buy your 1kg quota each you can pretty much offset the cost of your whole holiday, by selling them when you get back.. not that you would ever illegally sell cigarettes in the uk of course Wink

Went to Gran Canaria a winter or two ago. Many of the resorts are loaded with touts (Puerto Rica being a prime example) but we stayed in Puerto de Mogan and it's small enough and far enough out of the way to be tout-free. Lots of nice seafront bars and restaurants, good scenery, lovely little town. If I was going back to Gran Canaria I don't think I'd stay anywhere else, much of the island didn't seem to be as aesthetically pleasing.

booked to take the Mrs to Rome for 4 days in Feb 4 star hotel in the centre near the train station for £250
flights are £200 flying out of Gatwick so that would leave you £550 spending money
though don't expect sunshine, more likely similar to us

La Plagne is good for skiing, plus you can go and do the olympic bobsleigh run which is a huge amount of fun!

Essaouira perhaps? Nice little seaside port, and the weather should be decent enough in January. The living costs and riad's are dirt cheap, and there's plenty of windsurfing, quad biking, etc. to go with the chill out time.

Either fly into Marrakech and get the coach from there, or Eurostar it to Paris, spend a nice romantic evening there and then get a direct flight to Essaouira from ORLY.

If you wanted snow, then St Lary in the Pyrennees is only a shade over an hour from Toulouse airport and while not being the best skiing about is pretty underlooked as a resort and reasonably priced.

Both the above should avoid pissed up Brits, and touts in the main (Marrakech not withstanding)

Save the cost of a flight use the money saved to go to a posh hotel with a pool and hot tub and nice restaurant in the UK.

Puerto del Carmen in Lanzarote. Close to the airport so a short transfer, weather will be good, cheap as chips, loads of choice of bars and restaurants, fairly quiet in January but just enough life to stop it from feeling dead. And it's well weird being somewhere when there's xmas trees and decorations everywhere and the sun is burning your head...

This is the old town last January.

I'd give a vote for Rhodes as well. Lardos is really nice and quite quiet but super nice and plenty of good restaurants about, plus it's silly cheap but fantastic quality

Keep an eye on the hotukdeals site - often some VERY good deals on there and often they are in advance.

Aw that sucks like, I've been in June twice. Constant 40
Degrees with no rain at all. Turkey is nice as well, been on a day trip there from Rhodes. Quite similar food and things to do as well

If you arent airport and plan-phobic try get some flight-hops to the U.S. You can get there very cheaply if you are willing to hop a flight, or sometimes two (one domestic US side) to your destination. There is of course perhaps a day overall lost with transfer and backtracking flight time here n there but in the U.S particularly theyre very efficient internally as the flights run like buses.

For me it its a choice of a week in some standard holiday spot in europe or 5 days in the US at vegas, florida, cali, NY etc it wins everytime.

Rarely use agents or booking sites either. They make their business off your laziness to sit for a few hours searching 'by hand' for hundreds of pounds in savings. Yeah it does take a bit of time and planning but well worth it unless youre paid £100p/h+ Razz
