Hello, all.

My girlfriend and I are hoping to head away together next Summer for a break but we're more chucking ideas about at the moment, rather than seriously considering anything in particular.

Our budget isn't massive and our imaginations are clearly a bit sh1t, SO... I was wondering; what is the best holiday you've ever been on? Where did you go, what did you do and what made it so memorable?

My favourite was probably last year's European bike trip with a couple of good friends however that's not entirely applicable to this particular situation as my missus isn't in to two wheels! Damn. Oh well. Other than that, I loved Budapest. Great food and drink (which was dirt cheap), wonderful indoor food markets, beautiful architecture and a vibrant night life. Also, the Red Bull air races were taking part over the Danube while I was there which made for a top day out Thumbs Up .

Come on BCF, inspire me! Very Happy

Cheers,

Mark.

Japan for a month after I'd been apart from my wife and children for six months (they went to Japan so the kids could become fluent in Japanese).

Followed after the month by another five months apart. Crying or Very sad

Rome 2 years ago. Went alone, stayed in a great hostel with a communal drinking room underneath. Met a really good friend who's now in Canada, shagged 2 girls on the staircase and a receptionist in the shower, along with other drunk/drugged up things I can't remember.

Best bit, only cost me £200 all in.

Hmm, i had a lucky childhood and was taken to some amazing places. Many of them different types of holidays, but all have thier own unique special thing.

The dominican republic wins hands down as a 'relaxing' holiday - beautiful beaches with warm, crystal clear oceans. Paradise.

As a place to take kids - Florida. - obviously!

I have also been skiing - once in France and once in the US. The resort in France was amazing (Meribel) and the ski resorts we visited in the US didn't come anywhere close to matching it. I also fell in love for the first time on this holiday! Embarassed Embarassed

Also spent a month in Paphos (Cyprus) with a good friend a few years back - Lots of relaxing, swimming etc, but the highlight was hiring bikes and spending a couple of days off roading and a couple of days whizzing around mount troodos. I have never changed direction so many times on a bike in a single day. Awesome.

Also been on a couple of cruises. Great for sampling lots of different places within a short period of time.

So there is no 'best' for me. I have had different experiences which have all been unique and special in their own way.

Volunteering in Gomel State University, Peoples Republic of Belarus just north of Chernobyl. Fit slavic girls, all the lads in the army and I had very desirable un-irradiated plums to offer.

I enjoyed reading these replies, guys, cheers. It's so interesting reading about how differently people like to spend their time away. Hetz, one day I really hope to go to Japan. I can't imagine how difficult it must've been leaving your kids for such a long period of time. Dale, I've been to a number of ski resorts too because as a family we tended to go skiing rather than on Summer holidays - I love them! Meribel is fantastic, I agree.

Dirt biking in Turkey sounds great, Rome sounds mental and, Ariel, I hope the plums were put to use!

Hawaii, a few years back.

Started off in Waikiki, did some scuba diving, rode a Harley around the island, went to Pearl Harbour, lots of nice meals out etc. Then went to the big island, more diving including a night dive with a dozen manta rays, helicopter ride over the volcano, drove a Mustang around the island. Then first-class flights home.

My husband & I have just returned from Sri Lanka it is the 1st holiday we have both not wanted to return home from. You can relax on the beach/by the pool all day or you can travel by local bus or train for less than a £1 and see a lot of he island. We enjoyed it so much that we are planning a return visit next year to see parts of the island we missed out this time.

I haven't actually been on any 'big' holidays since entering adulthood. One or two package holidays pre-teenage years.

As it is I enjoy camping and not having to think about the 'real world'. Waking and sleeping with the Sun. That sort of thing.

A holiday would bug me too much, I'd want to stay in the place for a good while, 2 months at least. Absorb some of the culture, rather than simply being a fee-paying guest.

Three years ago did Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Francisco, three nights in each. Hectic as hell, so careful planning was needed to ensure we made the most of each place. Drove a Corvette to the Hoover Dam, a Mustang along Mulholland Drive, climbed a lot of hills in SF.

best holiday was bike riding around north scotland!

Been abroad to Gran Can, Malia, Tenerife but there is nothing in my eyes as beautiful as the British country side, if i had to choose between perfect weather clear sea on a soft sandy beach with hot weather and beautiful sunshine vs unpredictable weather ...........i would choose unpredictable British weather its what i know what im used to and absolutely love nothing can compare!

I find the hot weather iritating after a short while, and theres no scenery better than being on the plane coming back and seeing the rolling green hills on the British isles, keep your soft sandy beaches, perfect weather!
For me imperfection is perfection!

Shame Uk holidays are so damn expensive and its much cheaper to just go abroad.

Think i would love to spend a year in the countryside in Norway or sweden in the winter to see what its like moar snow!

Im like this with women cant stand make up i find the plain Jane look more attractive, less is more in my eyes

Went to Iceland this summer. Amazing place.

Did stuff like ice climbing, white water rafting, quad biking and swimming in geothermally heated rivers. Never been a place anything like it.

You'll see from the replies that having a great holiday is not about where you go, its about who you go with and what you do. As you're taking the girlfriend, you'll have a decent holiday. If you go back to the same place with 3 or 4 mates the following year, I'll bet that would be a great holiday Smile

its a cheap way to see europe, id say we probably spent no more than 3k in 3 months including beer food gas, and camping fees

7 days driving through Europe with 2 mates was epic. Also 3 weeks travelling round us with 3 Mates, did the usual Vegas, La and San Francisco. This was also epic. And 3 weeks around Thailand with the missus was cool. The best one was probably US. Cool
