Respond to old job applications?

I hate being rude but I am getting responses from jobs I applied for a LONG time ago. Most recent was a job I applied for and at at the time really wanted.

Except I applied in December 2012, another one emailed me after I'd applied in March. While another one which really takes the biscuit is July 2012.

Note these were actual jobs and not the typical agency fishing expeditions.

Considering they were quite happy to ignore me and always gave me the 'he's in a meeting' speech whenever I tried to follow up.

Should I bother to respond? It kind of feels douchy not to respond but then I have silly archaic values.

I also wonder are they calling me because they are really desperate, and thus an opportunity to work for them but as a really expensive £100 an hour contractor type.


Yet I feel equally done over by being given silence for months at a time.

Depends if you want the job I guess.

The way I would see it is that they didn't necessarily need you at that time, or maybe someone else was just slightly better suited to the position. And now they're looking for people again and they remembered you as a top applicant so they're actually kind of head-hunting you - think of it that way, maybe?

Yeah, always better to be courteous, even when you have every right to get pissy. No point closing doors you don't need to etc.

About 10 years ago, I got rejected for a job with Royal Mail. Then, without warning, 3 months later, got a letter telling me to start the next Saturday.

Before I got my current office job, I was offered a job with the NHS in sterile services. 4 months after being offered the job, I still hadn't started, and for the 3rd time was asked to complete criminal record checks and stuff, told them not to bother as I'd forwarded them to HR twice already.

Never ever burn your bridges when work is concerned - If you are still looking, then consider if not then a polite response could bail you out in the future when you are looking.

No point getting emotional when it comes to work.

It may be a case of "we'll keep your CV on file"?

I've been a 'second choice' candidate - in the first IT job I got they actually employed someone for two weeks, decided they were useless and then called me - so it was maybe getting on for a month after I'd first applied that I got a call.

So yes, depends how much you want the work, etc.
But definitely don't burn bridges - they might be friends with someone that does reply on time.

Somewhere I read that there can easily be 250 applicants for a lot IT jobs. So can quite understand why they don't want to take the time to talk to all the ones that weren't on their short-list - but yes, it is rather bad manners.

I have an interview tomorrow for a job I applied for several months ago. I applied for quite a few jobs, some as a manager, some as just a team member. At the same time I applied for M&S and got the job at interview. I decided not to take it and stayed in the job I already had. Problem is, I do not know what position I am being interviewed for, so I am just going to talk like a manager & hope to impress them.

They probably have to interview a target number of external candidates before promoting internally anyway. It's cheaper to get in touch with previous applicants than it is to take out adverts and all that bollocks.
