I always read up on bikes before I buy them and there is a fairly good reason why I've never owned an 'older' Triumph. Their engines. Keep saving and buy a newer one.

Really?

Never seen the 1050s drop below about 3.5k recently.

Puzzled by this. I'm watching Speed Triple like a hawk £3.5k gets a good specc'd one but I've not seen any less than that for a 2005 bike.

Edit: I'm referring to the Street Triple not the Speed.

If you're not looking for mint then that could do quite nicely, spend the change on a can and going through it to make sure it's fighting fit for next years riding... It is cat C though, Triumph's tend to hold a bit of value so for £2.5K you need some luck to find a good one.

i said tiger 3 times that makes it a triple,

they use the same motors as all the rest of the speed triples,
eg
tiger 900 same motor as the 885 tridents then fi from the t509 speed triple
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9e/Tiger_900_(T400).jpg
then came the 955 tiger, same motor as the... 955 speed triple Wink
https://s1.cdn.autoevolution.com/images/moto_gallery/medium/TRIUMPHTiger955i-medium-1096_2.jpg
then the 1050 tiger. hmmm where could they have got that motor... Wink
https://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/Gallery%20%20A/Triumph%20Tiger%201050%2009.jpg

then the 800 tiger, which they just stroked the 675 street triple
and tryed to make it as ugly as a bmw
https://www.tiger800.co.uk/images/2011-triumph-tiger-800-xc-adventure.jpg

so there you go consider your self educated, this isnt the 1970s or early 80s where they made ohv twins or pre war single tigers

Have ridden 08 Tiger 1050. Didn't think it was all that tbh. Motor lacked the power despite being a litre and just had no real good points aside from nice clocks and comfy seat.

I did see a 1050 speed for sale the other day for £2500, can't find the ad now, must have been snapped up, if you search hard enough anything is possible, especially this time of year

tiger 1050's are "retuned" and a good 15hp down on a speed triple

TBH if I was to buy a secondhand Trumpet I would love an original mk1 speed triple, the proper café racer style machine. I think with the Super III engine tuning mods (114bhp) and improved suspension and brakes, it would be a mega usable road blaster and massive fun!

One of the best bikes they ever did IMO. I would like to see if it's possible to make a speed four with the 1200cc Daytona engine, but other than in a straight line I don't think it would be anywhere near as good though!

I didn't want to mention the Trident 900 because it's not everyone's cup of tea, but since you are looking at '90s Tigers I will.

A lot of people mod their tridents to give them better brakes, shocks etc from the Daytona, Sprint etc of the same era - the modular nature of bikes meaning that we have a rare case of things being lego-like in their swap-ability. I think you can even swap the 750's ECU to give the 900 a higher redline (and risk blowing shit up, mind).

No good tridents are listed on ebay at the moment but I recently saw a modded one go for about £800, I got mine for £700 but the condition was worse and I had to spend a few hundred on it. They do generally go for a lot less than Tigers, Daytonas, Speed triples of the same era. The price that people try to flog their 900 speed triples for is cheeky.

Caveat: riding a Trident will mark you out as old / poor.

I have a naked version, the faired versions are ugly as sin in my opinion.

My version is a '92 and I picked it up last year with about 45k miles on it and have done about 10k of my own since then. It has required quite a bit of tinkering over that time. The model ran from 91-98 with the major change being the engine going from silver to black. The silver ones have the removable inspection hatch for the sprag clutch: the major issue with all 90s trumpys that everyone goes on about.

what model vfr?? you can generally get a few hundred quid for the swingarms and rear wheel for streetfighter projects,
another 100 or so for the front end, may be another hundred for fairings
etc etc, how much money do you need to recoup costs.
id say at this time of year its probably better breaking for those people taking on winter projects
