MZ ETZ 125 Project - Advice Needed

So, I am currently working on an MZ ETZ 125 (Interesting bike, hardly a looker but solid and a bit of fun) to restore and to do something a little different with them as I found the seat somewhat hideous.

It's an east German design, 2 stroke, 125cc motorcycle.

The bike was bought "running" even though the downpipe had a massive gaping hole in it so I decided to not run it after the first time and take it apart as one of the previous owners had replaced the wiring with completely different wires.

Notable things wrong with it:
- The downpipe needed chucking in the bin
- The thread on the brake caliper bleed nipple had gone rendering it useless
- The wiring needed re-doing
- New tyres

At the moment, we're working on cosmetics until I can afford to get the downpipe and caliper and this is where I could use some advice.

I now need help on what to do with the seat and the rear of it. All suggestions appreciated.

Now the seat has been removed and the seat bars have been chopped down to a single seat. Mudguard has been chopped down too.

This is where it is at at the moment and WHERE I NEED HELP:
- Tank and side panels have been sanded ready for a satin black paint job
- Seat has been shaved down to get an idea, not permanent.
- Bars have been set back
- MZ indent has been filled in
- A lot more I've probably forgotten.

This is it with a friend's cafe racer seat. Not sure on this one as I don't want people thinking I want it to be a cafe racer...

So if i understand;

Downpipe & caliper knackered.

Solution;

Butcher frame into uselessness, remove rev counter & trash all the paintwork in favour of painting it matt black.

Result;

Nice easy retro two stroke commuter project just became a worthless pile of scrap. Stubby exhaust & dominators on the way i guess..

if you look on ebay germany they sell loads of tune up bits for these..including expansion chambers !!!!!
I'd use a generic cafe racer style seat, purely as it finishes the rear of the bike off better than a lopped off saddle..
also consider a trials style rear muddie..purely for keeping the crap off ya back!!

I wasn't looking for an easy fix up. I was just giving a bit of background about the downpipe and caliper.

The reason the seat was chopped down is so a new one can be fitted with the base being flat. Personally I thought the seat was pretty horrible and the rear mudguard was square and boxy.

I'm getting a different, less square speedo/rev counter too.

I was thinking of maybe a flat-tracker seat (which will also lengthen it) or maybe putting a single seat on it and putting on the mudguard from the pre 1991 ETZ (Made of metal and round)

The paint was ruined when it arrived as someone had tried to match up the battery box and air filter cover with the tank using a rattle can from the DIY shop.

SUGGESTIONS on what kind of seat or other IDEAS on what you think would look good are welcome.

if i'm honest i'd be more keen on sorting the problems before spending money on cosmetics

the last thing you want is to have it looking great but to realise its FUBAR

that seat might go well, maybe narrow but it depends on the end product i suppose!

I had one of those, run great when set up properly and are fun to ride. As far as the modification goes get stuck in, fuck the haters

Make sure you keep the breather pin-hole clear on the petrol cap clear and clean, my old one gacked up and caused suction in the tank and it cut out in the middle of nowhere. Took a few breakdowns to realise what was causing it Also remember with mz's when you move the handlebar position you might need to adjust the clutch cable to ge it all running smoothly depending on how stretched your cable is.

Have a spare cylinder head for one of those if you need it. Good luck with the project.

I reckon flat tracker seat on that.

I'll give you a shout if I need it, could be a massive help.

It has now been re-sprayed and will be getting the seat soon. It's looking really cool now and I'm dead happy with it.

It was hard to get across how truly fucked.it was and it was bought not running so it has made a vast improvement.

My lad had one pre passing his test and although not a fan of two strokes, I rather liked it.
I felt it rode better than a CGI 125 of that era
A very simple machine.
I fixed it up for him and took it for an MOT which it passed
half a mile up the road on the way home it siezed up!

I'd checked the oil metering pump and supply previously too.
Cant remember why or what had failed off hand, it was ages ago.

So, we swapped the engine for a premix one from an earlier model and off he went and hacked it about until he did the direct access thing.

Mind you he did struggle with oil/fuel ratios and tended to put too much oil in it which it didnt like

Yeah I was a bit nervous about the auto lube and wanted to sort out some sort of pre-mix situation but it won't be possible for the budget.

Everyone has said that it's a great 1st bike and it definitely has it's charms, the flat-tracker style I'm going for should suite it being a 2 stroke also.

The paint has gone on now and it's looking really good, I'll post pictures when it's got the new seat on it.

What difference does it make whether it's someone's first bike or not? It's had a lick of paint and it's getting a new seat, it's hardly a costly restoration so I'm not worried about some knocks as the whole thing has cost pocket money.

Thanks for the advice, I'll keep it as an autolube bike, my preference wasn't to remove the autolube system, it was just something I've yet to look at.

I didn't say I was worried people will think it looks like a cafe racer... I'm not that disillusioned.
