I just bought a motorcycle jacket from Ghost Bikes for £37. I'm looking for a decent high vis vest to wear over the top (that looks less dorky than the massive sail I wore during my DAS). Seems that the high viz jackets are as expensive as the bloody jacket! Meh Sad

A couple of ££ off your local market is more than enough.

Hi-Vis is over rated. All you need is some reflective strips in case you are laid in the road.

Rest of the time that Hi-Vis is just background noise.

POLITE hi-viz vests?

Ok to wear - police say they're ok and you're not impersonating them - MCN article click here.

https://www.motorcyclenews.com/upload/298097/images/300x200/polite-cycling-waistcoat-large-image.jpg

Link to seller's site click here.
About £25 plus some postage costs.

I find the off the market generic ones with velco fastening at the front a waste of time. I switched to one with a zip and that works well.

used to wear hi vis but don't bother so much anymore, they look hideous and there's so many about have become background noise as above

I used to think that but since falling off the bike last year and rolling into the opposite carriageway I can see an advantage of possibly being more visible and hopefully staying alive.

I like it.

You can get a railway spec orange one with top quality retroreflective bits (held together by press studs so it breaks away if caught on something) with the humerous slogan of your choice printed on it for less than a tenner. Any local screen printing place outght to supply them.

I'd suggest retro-fitting a small catch or button at the top of the zip if you buy the waistcoat type and intend on speeding because they tend to unzip if going over about 90mph.

IF I use a Hi-vis I tend to use the long sleeved type with a chunky zip (so it stays closed) in xxxL size so it fits over my textile suit. I find the Velcro waistcoat vests come undone and flap around

There sure is - but i'm not going for a velcro one after wearing one on my DAS. I just didn't think the addition of a zip and a more fitted shape would result in a cost 3x that of the velcro 'fit like a sail' jobbies.

Since when is ~£4 a lot of money?

Hmm this looks rather fetching for the price Smile

https://www.hivis.net/58/High-Visibility/Hi-Vis-Executive-Sleeveless-Vest/

I know high viz may not be de rigueur amongst you lot but during my DAS my instructor really stood out wearing a h-belt type hi viz thing. I figured that as a new rider it may be worth me getting something. From the above though it seems not?

Can get bog standard ones cheap as chips in local builders merchants and the like, problem is they tend to be a bit shite once the wind gets under them.

The velcro ones tend to rip open - can still be useable but end up looking like batman

The zip ones inflate like a sail unless they're a perfect fit, which ends up getting quite annoying at speeds

Personally only wear them when visabities really bad like fog and heavy rain.

I was looking for one, they are very expensive.

I ended up buying this:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161119302429?var=460216729111&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

It's pretty good, I got XL to fit over my bike jacket. It's apparently waterproof too, so should keep me a bit drier.

Can't argue with the quality for the price, I'd recommend it.

Sorry, I read that you wanted a decent hi vis and didn't register what you'd paid for your jacket. In defence of the ICON one it is really well made etc, however there are many cheaper items out there as others have linked.
Post up what you go for and let us know how it works out.

Sometimes you see police and such wearing a fairly close fitting HiVis vest which is a sort of combined utility belt/big pockets thing with radios and stuff on.
Is that sort of thing available?

I kind of liked the idea of being able to put items you want in and out of pockets several times - e.g. a camera - more accessibly (rather than less so if you had a cheap vest over what pockets you have)

I like to keep one in my bag for low visibility days, or to use as an extra layer... I like the idea of those POLITE ones but I wouldn't pay that much... I saw a lad on a supermoto wearing one once, yeah because people will think you're the police when you're popping wheelies down the road Razz

Yes. Stuff like this (clicky) or this from eBay.
Tends to be body armour/stab vest stuff though.
So that makes them many pennies.
Could remove armour.

Get yourself one from a sports or outdoor shop. Chances are it will be far cheaper. If its for running or cycling, it will be close fitting (over your gear)
