...it's just wrong and trying to be politically correct in 2013.

The 1955 advert (clicky YouTube link) has a white guy sitting with a black girl (am I allowed to say that!) at about 21 seconds in.

History tells me this would not have happened in 1955s America.

Any other adverts that are wrong or trying to be too PC?

Although they were racist as a society it certainly wasn't the case for individuals. The guy would probably get a shoeing if he was spotted by the wrong people but many interracial relationships happened in the 50s.

But in the 'modern' section there's a black girl and a black waitress who all become white when it flashes back to '55. Seems legit.

Ah, black girl with white girl in modern section. An pitch for the lesbian customers which I missed Wink

The black waitress in modern has a sex change to male in 1955. Which is interesting.

Inter-racial relationships certainly occurred, but were pretty uncommon - marriage could not be sanctioned between a white person and a person of any other race.
(Although my understanding is that this did not stop non-white races marrying e.g. a black and asian marriage.)

Irrespective of relationships, segregation included restaurants - there would've been a separate counter and eating area for black customers (if they were allowed at all), and so consequently the couple would certainly not be sitting together.

According to the legend, Muhammad Ali threw his Olympic gold medal into the Ohio river after returning home triumphant and not being allowed to eat in the restaurant he wanted to (whites only).

As opposed to now, when segregation is online!

www.365black.com

To be fair, I suspect it's a bit of a case of "can't win" - they get shouted at when they use all-white in adverts too.

I dunno about the accuracy of that particular advert.

But I was kind of shocked once when I saw a history documentary where half the Roman leadership were portrayed by 100% black actors. I absolutely don't mean it in a racist way or anything like that, but it was just so obviously wrong.

The advert is made in 2013.. thus it needs to conform to current standards, not those on which it portrays. It needs to meet certain equality standards like at least one black person, and one woman etc, could be a black woman...

Just look at any advert on the telly now, and you'll realise that there may be just one black person acting, simply to conform to equality standards.

I could point out many examples, one being Friar Tuck here:

One of my pet hates is feeling like we need to qualify non-bigoted statements with a "this isn't racist/sexist/homophobic disclaimer". Of course the Roman assembly wasn't mostly black men, bugs me that suggesting we are not completely blind to somebody's race could even be construed as racist.

That said, the emperor Septimius Severus was probably at least a little bit brown.

I suspect that on average Romans have been portrayed as a lot more white and North European than reality, so sticking some different wrong people in there doesn't seem that bad! Smile

How do you know it's made up? Laughing Laughing Stories of the medievil ages, that do not involve witchcraft or magic tend to be true, although exaggerated as it gets told down the years.

Besides, that's not the point. Even if there were a black man in the country, it would be more than possible that he would be subjected to slavery, or in the least some kind of freak show for being the different colour to the norm.

Much less to be a practicing friar. Even if he wanted, they wouldn't allow it.

Why is it obviously wrong?

It's a popular misconception that the Roman empire was entirely lead and policed by Romans, but that doesn't even make logical sense, there wouldn't be enough of them to go round.

What they actually did was conquer and then derive legions from the local population, which is a very sensible thing to do, because who knows the local people and terrain better than the locals?

In addition, take a look at a map of the empire; at it's peak, it encompassed up to a quarter of the planet's population, including North Africa, the Middle East and the Moorish areas of the Med and Northern Europe.

It's a racing certainty that there were battalions of black soldiers and many black leaders, some of them at a very high level of authority.

Sorry I was a bit vague.

The documentary wasn't about the everyday Roman middle-management.

It was about one of these guys - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Roman_emperors

Most of them look white to me. Apart from Severus Alexander.

Aaaand I've just done a bit of googling and it turns out he was from the Lebanon area and is generally hailed as the first/only black emperor of Rome, and even then he was really just half Arab, among a few others who were also Arab, rather than properly black like the documentary suggested.

Depends on the State, but yes, segregation was alive and kicking in 1955.

What I find insultingly unrealistic is the suggestion that you can go into any McDonalds troughery anywhere in the UK and receive an item of food that looks even remotely like this.

https://i40.tinypic.com/1zpi6fq.jpg

See:

https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rdlXbl445Mk/UZYTXWXpdUI/AAAAAAAAB4w/aW0_I7kQutA/s1600/q.jpg

And more here.

Why am I ranting? Because looking at the advert is making me hungry and minded to get one, even though I absolutely know that the item delivered will be completely different.

Don't be tempted, I was and it was the source (not to say sauce) of much disappointment.

The bun was surprisingly (not in a good way) sweet, the burger was tasteless, the bacon added nothing but another texture and salt, the tomato and lettuce brought tepid and unwelcome moisture to the party and the burnt caramelised onions combined with burnt smoky sauce to leave the whole thing tasting..........well, burnt!

Segregation in 'public accommodation' was illegal in Illinois (where McDonald's was founded in 1955) since 1885.

Generally, the further north the less race mattered, but it might still have been seen as slightly unusual.

Quote:
In high school I went with a black girl in northern Indiana, and it was considered no more unusual than any other form of dating and relationship. The moment we went outside of the boarding school, however, such pairings would have been deemed exotic and slightly dangerous - not because of anything inherently cultural within the bonding, but because of the potential for rude teasing and maybe even violence. In the deep rural south, this would not have been something either of us would have attempted openly, for fear of life and limb.

I watched a documentary long long ago; a Black English accademic, who'd written a book on the Native African in England... ISTR that he'd watched the American TV program 'Roots' and had tried researching his family expecting to find that his ancestors were forceable removed from Africa, ending up in England as imigrants from Jamaica... turned out that his acestors were Spanish or something, and not a slave amongst them! Hence his book went and looked at the oragins of black english.... was quite interesting;

Friar Tuck? Yup he COULD have been black. Robin Hood legend falls at the end of the Crusader era; during which, whilst the moors converted the North Africans to mohamadism at the point of a sword... it was an idea that got from the Christians!

Same as Jihad, the 'Holy-War' ironically! There you go, how PC is that? We took from the Muslims modern mathematics (the Zero Concept and arabic numerals) They took the idea of a Holy Crusade!

Anyway; fall of... Tripoli? Marked the point when the Christians lost thier last foot-hold in the holy-land; around about 1270, some 200 years after the start of the crusades in 1090.....

Two centuries, of Christian, and significantly Norman-Christian rule in the region; and there were MANY Black Christians, and hence black monks and priests... who became refugees when the Moors took control, and at many points between, and ther-after.

Worth Noting as far as British History goes; the first crusade; 1090, was notionally launched at the behest of the Bazantine Empire; the last remnant of the old Roman Empire, ruled from Constantinople, modern day Budapest; basically they wanted to recruit some Mercenaries from the old Western Roman Empire to swell the Ranks, and Pope Urban II, who had his own political agenda, and wanted to try and eradicate the 'corruption' of the Orthadox Church and assert the supremacy of the 'Reformed' Roman Catholic Church of Rome....

Occuring less than 25 years after the battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest, the new Norman Aristocracy was still consolidating its rule over England, and influence into Scotland and Wales. The first Crusade attracted a lot of disenfranchised Anglo-Saxon nobles, as well as many more adventurouse Normans, who raised for war in the Chivalric order wanted to fight 'Real' battles, not put down peasant revolts!

The Second Crusade; 1147, co-incided with the English Anarchy; when the Country was in Civil war between Stephen of Blois, grandson of William the Conqueror, and the Empress Matilda, and Mother of Henry II; The Church kept swapping its support between the two sides, and many Nobles faced ex-communication, for continuing to support any-one... so instead "Took to the Cross" and went crusading, fighting for the church, absolving them for the duration of their feudal service to fight for their oath lord!

So; the English had a close associatiation with the Crusades and the crusader states; and many Black Christian refugees came to England during that era; often with a Norman noble as a sponsor.

However, after the Crusades; Spain fell to the Moors; and for two hundred years; there was more asimilation in the Iberian Peninsula, until 1490, when the last Moorish city state, Granada fell to Isabella, and the moors were 'ejected', from 'all Spain'... ironically in a bit of enthnic cleansing, that paid little heed to religion, creating even MORE black Christian refugees... who under medieval law, could seek sanctury in a Church... and the luck-ones; if they could recite a bit of the bible, might have got safe passage from teh country! But to where?

France and England. France significantly gave refuge to Blacks and Jews with money.... who promoted trade... and then when the kings coffers were low... issued eddicts to eject them.... circumvented by big bribes to church and king!

Same policy was in effect in England to a large degree as well, though; but English interests in Navigation and Metalwork, attracted a lot more accademics as well as merchants.

1453, saw the fall of Constantinople to the Turks; and more 'cosmapolitan' refugees seeking refuge in Western Europe, and finding it in England and France.

And at the time of Henry VIII, early 1500's, London already had a thriving 'ethnic' community.... and ISTR that there was a quirk in that in official records they were often reffered to as 'Jews'....

A law had been enacted, I think by one of the Edwards, during the crusader era, that allowed 'Jews' to settle in England, despite it being illegal to be Jewish... provided they attend church & take Christian instruction; which was exploited by many imigrants of many creeds and colours!

So, moving on! Tudor England; the formation of the Church of England and the break with Rome; an age of exploration, as Arab Navigation coming out of Granada and Toledo fuels the Renaisance, unhindered in England by the Doctrines of Rome..... Science floruishes; Newton invented Physics; America is discovered and England becomes the hub of a new Protestant commenwealth, built not on the Church but on Trade.

And a BIG shortage of sailors!

Battle of Trafalga, and the Royal Navy navy records show that something daft, like less than a third of the sailors in the English fleet... were English! Huge numbers of them were taken into the service wherever they could be found, and apparently a LOT of them were signed on in North Africa, as England tried to steal Spanish trade routs with the east.

OK... 'Black-Slaves'... the high era of 'Slaving' was in the later 1700's; during the American Wars, the American War of Independence, the French Revolution and the Napoleonic wars.

Up until that point, the slave-trade hadn't been particularly large; it existed; BUT... to man the plantations.... there were cheaper ways to find man-power!

Usual manner was to offer 10 year contracts of passage to prospective settlers; suggesting that they could make so much money in the New-World, within five years they could afford to buy thier own farm.... reality was more often they found themselves locked into contracts of employement, against huge debts run up by the price of thier 'passage; then the rent on their accomodation, and the bill to the company store!

However; American wars and on; cheap 'white' man-power was in short supply; and that was when the Plantation Owners turned to the Slavers; who in response to demand and prices, had to start looking beyond the 'convict' markets of North Africa, where most slaves were not taken from thier homes by white-men... but as often as not 'sentenced' to slavery for some crime, by thier community!

Big Numbers in the Wilberforce era WERE shipped accross the atlantic; BUT....

There were already large numbers of 'Blacks' living, as free men, in England and other Northern European countries; significantly in the ports, having arrived as sailors....

SO! While it is almost certainly demographic appeasement in casting....

A Black Medieval Monk?

ACTUALLY, not so impossible, or improbable. Unlikely, uncommon, BUT it probably DID happen!

Muhammad Ali was one of the biggest racists going. He was often quoted saying things like birds can only go with birds and bees only with bees and races shouldn't mix either.
