I think Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon' and The Beatles 'Sgt Peppers Lonlely Hearts Club' are absolute, utter shite.
Can somebody please shed some light on the situation? Why the hell are they ALWAYS mentioned in the 'top 10' lists of best albums / bands etc?
They must be liked by millions of people but I just can't see why, and I'm massively open minded when it comes to music ____________________ 2012 KTM EXC 250

Try listening to them again and listen to how they are put together.
Try listening to the strings and horns on the Sargent Peppers album .
Or the slick competence of Dark Side Of The Moon.
Try listening to them more than once and you might find yourself thinking "Actually That`s not bad"
Or? maybe this is more your bag man?

Glad someone else thinks this. Have always thought Pepper's in particular was ridiculously overrated. Not to say that the Beatles, especially Lennon, weren't responsible for some fantastic songs. But very few, if any, appear on Sergeant Pepper's. IMHO, Rubber Soul was an infinitely better album.
I have always thought Pink Floyd were at best mediocre after Syd left. Piper at the Gates of Dawn is a masterpiece. Dark Side of the Moon is just a load of standard prog rock pap, by and large. You listen to something like See Emily Play, Apples & Oranges or Bike and you know you are being touched by rare genius. But songs like Money and Us & Them just strike me as a blatantly transparent (if spectacularly successful) way for the Floyd to conquer the American market.
Loved how Syd always sang with his own accent. Soon as he went, Pink Floyd adopted the standard fake Yank drawl. Was all downhill after Saucerful of Secrets. IMHO ____________________ The RXS100: vehicle of choice for Chuck Norris

Is not "A Day In The Life" a great track?
For me "Money" was one of the first track I listened to from an album and learnt all the words ____________________ I am the sum total of my own existence, what went before makes me who I am now! |

Just because you're open minded doesn't mean you have to like or admire any music.
You like what you like and maybe a decade down the line you'll see things in DSOTM that you'll 'get', even if it's just the quality of the recordings and production. Maybe.
My music collection is extremely varied yet some albums I should love i.e they have the ingredients that I like. Yet even after all these years I still cannot stand them or 'get' them.
Very fickle this art malarkey. ____________________ Diabolical homemade music Bandcamp and Soundcloud

For whatever it's worth (precisely fuck all ), I would consider this the best album ever recorded, simply because it struck a certain chord and every single track stands up well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0DRch3YLh0&list=PL0527D4FFCB2330DA ____________________ The RXS100: vehicle of choice for Chuck Norris |

Both are masterpieces in their own right. At the time of Sgt Pepper there was nothing else like that album. It was a radical change in the Beatles sound that didnt go down well with the "love me do" fans. The emerging "hippies" got it and as a result it became an instant hit. It helped pave the way for psychedelic rock. It became influential for many 60's and 70's prog rock/psychedelia bands.
Pink Floyds DSOTM was a masterclass in recording. Listen to the album in its original format, not this remastered bollocks edition, with a pair of headphones on. It was the first album ever made in quadrophonic sound, the best way to listen to it was in the middle of a room with a speaker in each corner. Headphones work though.
Again, like Sgt Peppers, the band had taken a new direction with the psychedelic sounds giving way to more prog rock sounds. For the first time it wasnt just a collection of songs the band had thrown together. The album was worked on as a whole piece and it tells a story. It takes you through various aspects of life in general covering mundane tasks that one does daily and touching on madness and mental illness.
It was also the first album and the only album that just by listening to it you can tell the band had fun. It was the only time they really worked as a cohesive unit.
That said, its all down to taste. Personally I'm a massive Floyd fan. Have been for as long as I can remember.
I agree with AJ's saying music itself isnt life changing. I disagree with the importance for what they represented part. DSOTM is still selling in vast quantities not because of what it represented at the time but because its still finding new fans. When I went to see Roger waters and when I have seen the Aussie and Brit Floyd tribute I'm always surprised at the amount of youngsters at these gigs, I've seen kids wearing Floyd T shirts.
Now and then there are albums that will become timeless classics. Whether you like them or not does not change this. Lou Reeds Transformer, The bends by Radiohead, Nevermind by Nirvana, Metallica's Black album, Guns n Roses Appitite, Bowies Ziggys spiders, Meatloafs Bat out of hell. Sex Pistols never mind the bollocs I could go on but you get the idea. Just because you dont appreciate them does not make them shite.
I cant stand Radiohead but still appreciate the work that went into The Bends and can see it as a classic. ____________________ illuminateTHEmind wrote: I am just more evolved than most of you guys... this allows me to pick of things quickly which would have normally taken the common man years to master
