hi every one i just brought myself a project. it is in a bit of a state but hoping with some help to transform it into a go-cart or offroad buggy.
depends on state of engine in the bike i brought . like i say its a bit of a state so 1st i need to get it running to test engine and look at options, all the wiring is a mess wires cut ect the bike has been stood for many moons by the looks of. to get help il need to know what im working with. this leads me to the question. i need help to find out what bike it is, i know its a suzuki. reg check comes back that its a 550cc but model is unknown, the age has come back 1981. the frame numbers was on a sticker that has been sprayed over. looking over the net i have looked and the gs550, looks very similar but its down to the brakes mine has rear drum and twin disk the only ones i can find have rear disk or rear drum and single disk at front. this has been turned into a bit of an essay but hope someone can help https://i1271.photobucket.com/albums/jj632/Master_Jay9119/1471934_10151990920507207_1016595451_n_zps6da2ad3d.jpg

It's not a Suzuki the GS550's were all 549cc, the Kwacker GT550 were 553cc. Post a picture to confirm it.

Z550 has exactly 553cc displacement...

EDIT: Or maybe it's a GPZ...

The GT550 is shaft.
The GPz550 variant was chain.

IIRC same engine, etc.

Google gives me this image...

I believe fairing optional.
More info and pics on GPz click here. Note the twin rear shocks in pic.

A Motad 4 into 1 is a standard replacement for these machines.

I would suspect as this is an early model then it's a Z550.

As in this Z550 restoration one on the Kawasaki Owners Club site.

Came across this for the Kz550 1982 (google is your friend)
I may have a Haynes manual for the Kawasaki 550 four in the garage.
Can see if can get to it one evening (busy with family stuff atm).

looking at the diagram above there is a lot i don't want.
the last loom i made was for a pitbike and was as simple as you can get, you have the wires from the stator plate to a cdi unit then to the coil to the spark off the cdi there was a wire you earth to kill engine
can i do the same on this even tho it has more cylinders so..

Just get into mspaint and start getting rid of the shit you dont need. Start with light stuff and gradually reduce it down and down until you are just looking at the ignition circuit.

Like this, I've started you off.....

Red is an ignition (and killswitch) controlled live.
Yellow/Black is ground. - (No idea why Kwak don't follow convention and keep black ground)
Black is one of the cold ends of the HT coils.

It looks like black is sent to the tacho as some kind of pulse so I'd leave it unconnected for the time being.

This is what I would try as a starting point.

What was you planning to use as the power source for the coils?

This is a TCI ignition system which will need an external power source. Unlike the self-exciting CDI ignitions on small two stroke and mx bikes.
