Looking for some advice with regards my current situation as some of you know l came over to Canada back in the summer to do a 2 month long offroad bike trip (which l still haven't finished a report on...), At the end of the trip l went back to a small town in Saskatchewan to live with my girl friend who l met there during the trip.

Since the end of August l was looking for work while causally helping out on the family farm and doing the odd job fixing stuff for people around town, but the problem l had was that the nearest city (Saskatoon) about 30 mins drive away where my girl friend works has only a population of a few hundread thousand so after 2 months of searching l was unable to find work as a controls technician which was my line of work back in the UK or anything l was suitable/qualified for.

So in the end l was forced to take a position with a large global controls company which l had past experience working on some of there systems back in the UK. The only issue was that the position they had open was not in Saskatoon (they have a office but no opening) but 300km south in the provincially capital of Regina. Which due to the distance and the need to be on call some weeks l had to rent a apartment in Regina to stay at during the week.

I,ve been working here now for 2 weeks and the job is not a problem at all nether is for now the traveling 3 hours back home at the weekends to see my girl friend who works day shifts every other weekend which fucks it up even more, this is stressing me out that l,m only seeing her every other weekend and for a few hours in the evenings of the other added to that Regina is a absolute shit hole of a city (even by London standards) and the basment suite l had to rent due to a lack of references is a constantly noisy damp dump where i am unable to get a good nights sleep, I just cant stand being here but as my current open work permit expires in June next year l need to keep this job otherwise l have no hope in being sponsored for a additional 3 years and getting a permitant foot hold in Canada. My Girl friend has been very supportive of me doing all this but l feel like l,m going to fuck it all up now being away so much and being tied into this new job.

To sum it all up l have a fantastic life with my wonderful girl friend in a small rural town on the Canadian Prairies, l but couldn't find any work in the local city so had to take a job 300km away in a another city and live there during the week, but l hate the city and being away from the town l now call home, any advice on what to do would be great.

How long are you tied into the dark, damp, dump for?
I reckon that if you can improve your temporary work time accommodation, the minor inconvenience of travelling some 180 miles every weekend to visit the crush of your life will become less irksome.

Off the top of my head....

Go back to doing odd jobs and keep 'networking'.
Ask gf to get a job and join you.
Both upsticks to somewhere better.

Finally. Man up..There is an air of clingyness about you Razz .....and keep this in the back of your mind...you can always get back on your bike.

Particularly if youre the main earner, why stay in a dead end town. Id be convincing her to move somewhere with you where you will jointly afford and nice place and both have better incomes most likely. Never see why people remain in these out in the middle of no where places theres no future there Thinking

It's inhabited by lumberjacks I tell you.
...and Mounties, who always get their man....that's very heterosexual Wink

On topic, move or look at sharing. They do that in Canada right?
Still keep looking for other jobs.
Get GF to look for other jobs.
These jobs do not have to be in Saskatoon/Regina or wherever GF is.
You could go somewhere different together.

I know someone who emigrated and now lives over to the west in Chilliwack. He has a very good life. I'd stick with Canada.

It'll either work or it won't and, if it doesn't, it won't be because of the distance. I spent a year living 220 miles away from my now wife and then the best part of 5 years 160 miles apart, again seeing her only on weekends - not every single weekend mind.

It actually just made the time together better and that as the focus rather than the time apart.

Get yourself a nicer room for when you're away though or you'll be perpetually miserable.

Indeed. Start by fixing the easiest things to fix to make life bearable then move onto the more complex stuff. Accommodation has to figure pretty highly on the list. Now you've rented for a bit you have a reference to get somewhere different, right?

You're bootstrapping your way into Canada, it's all for the greater good. Suck it up in the short term and it'll be worth it in the long term.

For things like this, just remind yourself that some people have to do far, far worse.

In poorer countries, guys will leave their whole family just to earn a living to keep food on the table for their wife and kids. They won't be able to go home for years. (eg Indians etc working on construction in places like Dubai and Singapore - I have a friend who does this.)

I worked with a guy from Gaza who couldn't return home for years.

You on the other hand are just a few hours away from your good lady Thumbs Up

Welcome to life son.

You have answered your questions yourself (you have to keep the job).
Think long term (aim for residency etc)
Tough it out. (find a better flat / make sure the time you do spend with Mrs Tatters is proper quality etc.

Silkys Final Advice (which I always ignore myself):
Dont let the minge control you.

I have done some more thinkering about this issue .... and as you were once a muddy brethren of mine I feel compelled to provide you with solutions.
Trust me, I have a lot of experience with the bitches and work sh*t.

This is what you need to do for the short / medium term (6 months to a year)

1) Finish your bike trip report and post to BCF travels section.
Many of the issues that you are having now are a direct result of negative Karma caused by me looking in that section of BCF and going "that f*cker still hasnt posted up the report".
Doing so will instantly improve both your mental health and your financial wellbeing.

2) Look for a slightly better flat / flat share etc.

3) Keep the job - perform well - take on things and responsibilties that other will not - This will eventually put you in a position where you have more bargaining chips for things like leaving early on a Friday or arriving late Monday etc.

4) Look at the periods where you dont see Mrs Tatters so much and try to fit in a drive back. Just once a month will do.
If its 3hrs then its only 1hr longer than my standard M25 drive home to see Mrs Silky.
If I can tough it out 4 times a week (and my name is Silky, take the hint) then you should be able to do it once a month.
This will break up the gaps and make things seem much brighter.

5) The times you are back with her ... make sure they are full of quality time. Even if its just sitting watching tv.

6) Be positive overall. This positiveness will filter into your general attitude and you will not only feel better, but she will think better of you.
No one likes a grumpy old fart like Marjay. !!! you get my point !!.
Just think of where you have come from ... what amazing things you have now... the opportunitys.. the bright exciting future.. etc.
You have to feel good about all that shizz brah !

If all this fails , then you have only one other oprtion open to you.
Its called the 'SiggiSilky Plan Z' :(copyrighted)
Take a shed load of drugs , expand your mind, realise the world is doomed, arm yourself, then go postal.
Make a name for yourself son.
Take out someone horrible.

Bacon - check
Alcohol - check
Female (appears to be complete) - check
Twice weekly 300km bike ride - check

It would appear that all the requisite elements are present!
Presume you can't do odd jobbing due to the nature of visa requirements, therefore, if it were me, I'd be looking at spending the next 7 months in Hellsville taking some kind of evening class to widen my future job prospects in the backwoods.

Good luck, Tatters

Get woman to move in with you in job land.
Use woman to have references and rent somewhere better.
Go back home with woman at weekends to see family.

Ooh, she's cute. I suggest you punch her in the tits then do her up the Gary.

(problem not solved?)

If you love the town that much, think of what you'd need to do to get a job there. Retrain? Start a business?
