Hey guys,
Just a quick one to let you all know that Drift have released a new helmet camera, it looks cracking,
The Drift Ghost-S
Its a bit pricey at £330 but it's not a bad price at all since the last one was £300 at launch and this one is considerably better.
The specs are incredible, better battery life, higher bitrate, higher FPS at 120fps@720p and 60fps@1080p making slow motion video almost cinematic quality and it has loads of modes built in.

If you're in to your cameras like me then it's an exciting piece of kit and well worth getting,

Have a look at the specs and the demo vid on the Drift Innovation website and you can buy one at ActionCameras.co.uk (only place I know of selling them)

Anyway it's worth a look.
Camera link here from email newsletter thingy,

They bring these things out every year, and they're always better than the previous, but I'm not so sure they justify the cost.

This kinda smells like spam to me though.

It's absolutely not spam and I'm not being paid to advertise anything, It's a new release which I was made aware of and decided to share with you guys, I've been on this forum a long time and I'm well aware of the scepticism of the members lol
Figured people might want to know about it.
If I were being paid or it was spam wouldn't there be some kind of referral link or "tell them I sent you" how would they know if I had since nobody here knows who I am.

Silence! The mob has spoken! Wink

What makes it smell a little porkish is that you're saying that it's "well worth getting" without apparently having tried one. Just for example, those frame rates could be unusable in practice.

My gripes with the Drift HD as a motorcycle helmet cam are:

1) it takes far too long to turn on and start recording

2) turning it on and starting recording is very fiddly - i.e. risky to do if you're on the move. You have to depress a button for a second, and it's a damn hard button to press accurately with gloves on, then wait for the camera to boot up, but not so long that the screen turns off, then press the same button once. Then sometimes it ends up not recording and turning itself back into standby mode, whereupon you need to try to record again. If you let the screen turn off, then you have to press the button once, wait for the screen to turn on, then press it again. So in practice you have to verify that the red light is flashing by looking at yourself in a mirror. Too fiddly, like I said.

3) Standby eats battery just as fast as recording all the time, so there is almost zero point in not recording all the time. This makes the remote almost useless - why bother to stop if your battery will run out just as fast? IMO it should last for weeks in standby mode, like ipads do, and wake up in a second or two from the remote.

I don't use the continuous record / press to save system either, as I'm fairly sure, from past accident experience, that if anything serious did happen, I'd be too shocked to remember to save. Or I might not even be conscious.

4) It records files in chunks of about 30 minutes at a time, and crucially, it loses a few seconds as the recording switches from one file to the next. I've lost interesting moments because of this.

This update doesn't address any of my issues, so I won't be buying another one just yet.

PS: about the only point of most of the features (remote, continuous record with selective save) is because video editing - or rather, video cut clipping - is a PITA for most people. I do mine with an ffmpeg x264 stream copy using time ranges selected using a simple video player I wrote - no transcoding, no quality loss. But not everyone has the patience or tools.

I've been wanting to get one for my car [and will for the bike come spring when i aim to get riding again], tempted to try one of the more budget options like the lidl one - so long as the footage is viewable its good enough.

I'd imagine no better and likely worse than an SJ1000 which you can get for £50.

Mic in could be useful for vlogging in the dry, if you're that sort.
