After Walloper's post on the Pinlock issues, where I discovered that the pins are adjustable, I got to thinking, Is there a serious Top Tips thread anywhere in BCF land?

I'm not talking about the kind of ones from Viz, but proper helpful tips and hints that you may think are second nature, but some of us could really use.

If not, maybe we could request one with a Sticky at the top of General Bike Chat in the same way as there are ones for Insurance and Bikes for shortarses in the New Bikers forum.

The first thing to know about stickies, is that nobody ever reads stickies.

To be honest all of the stuff that would be covered in the sticky would be stuff thats already on one of the other forums anyway and could be found by simply searching in the BCF archives.

Although saying that, we do know this never happens and noobs post a question that has been asked serveral times before so I suppose the sticky might prevent that sort of thing... Can't hurt to try I guess!

To be fair I usually do at least once.

Make a thread, look after it and I'll stick it in the 'Useful threads' sticky which no one reads anyway.

At least that way there's only one thread clogging up the forum that people don't read - seen well in other forums where most of the first screen before you scroll is stickies and you still get questions that have pretty much been answered just in the title of the sticky threads Smile.

Forum stickies are a pet hate.

Especially on forums that repeat them on every page, so every time you click "next" you only see about 5 new threads, the rest of the space being taken up by the same numerous stickies.

As long as the first post is kept updated so you don't have to read 10 pages of posts, most of which not very helpful.

I remember someone created a top tips thread before, and it ended up filled with fake tips. Was quite amusing, but I don't think we need a repeat of that.

I prefer just moaning about the search function when people ask a common question.

The people that don't know how to search to find most answers that are already there are the sort that will not read sticky anyways to be honest, its a nice idea but probably wouldn't get used by those that should use it i'd imagine.

Plus what would we all do without questions about how to turn your left headlight off and whether a chain is too loose if it touches the floor.

Whenever I see a good tip on a forum, I underline it with a marker pen so I know where to find it again.

Old Thread Alert!

The last post was made 12 years, 127 days ago. Instead of replying here, would creating a new thread be more useful?
