When first thinking about riding I assumed any riding gear could be worn over normal clothes but having done my research and read the stickied articles on here, its important to have the right gear skin tight. But what do people wear when commuting to work?

I work in an office and have to wear a suit, I couldnt have worn this under my gear anyway for creasing but I doubt it would be very forgiving stuffed in a top box every morning, ready for me to change into when I get to work either!

Perhaps this might sound quite trivial but how do other people in similar situations do it? Do people always wear full gear for commute or perhaps just jacket and gloves over shirt?

I'm a programmer. People are happy that I wear clothes -- full stop -- so this isn't generally an issue for me. (I wear a textile jacket and over-trousers on top of my normal jeans/shirt.)

However, I work in an office with a lot of sales folks etc. who dress in suits worth more than my car. Lots of them ride (BMW GSes or RTs, usually Rolling Eyes ). Most of them wear textiles. The jacket and tie will be neatly folded in their Ewan McGregor-adventure style aluminium panniers. A couple come in one- or two-piece leathers as if just making a pit stop during a MotoGP. They carry their suit in a rucksack, neatly folded, etc.

This isn't something to worry too much about. You'll figure out a system, then have to change it for the summer.

I take in folded shirts on a Monday and leave at work for the week. Swap over on Friday. A pair of trousers also at work. These on coat hanger.

Jacket and ties if required are also at work (took car in one day). I also took in a pair of shoes. Have some deodorant in a draw too.

I'm lucky enough to have office where I can hang this stuff and space to get changed.

In summer wear black chino style trousers so I don't always need to change out of them.
Winter trousers if not fitted with liners I can just get them over a pair of trousers.

As said work out a system and then refine it based on your experience and needs. A 2 helmet size top-box is a godsend for this stuff although a smaller size would also be useful. If that fails a tail pack is good.

I appreciate you could wear work trousers on the bike in the summer as its warmerbut what about safety if you fell off? Or are you more concerned about the wind chill and wet factor.

All sounds feasable, we do have lockers in the warehouse I could nab to store clothes.

Just dont get me started on helmet hair!

Apology, didn't make clear. These are the bike style chino look with kevlar. I use the soft bendable Hein Gericke Hiprotec armour.

Took ages to find right suitable pair. Tried some denim (so not really suitable for work) Arlen Ness ones. Armour in knees was silly. When standing was below knee. Ok when leg bent on bike, just silly when walking around.

It's to your benefit if you go for a long skid down a straight road or over gravel.

That's a track situation though. What'll kill you on a commute is the sudden interaction with a white van, road sign or kerb. All that a tight suit will do there is make it easier to sling you in the bag in one piece.

At the moment, solid black Draggin' kevlar jeans with a tight weave, which I get away with as business wear in the context of the rest of my dapper outfit (waistcoats and tie clips are coming back, you wait and see). Waterproofs over the top as necessary.

When it gets colder, business trousers under over-size cordura motorcycle trousers.

Trousers aren't that big of a deal, it's the coat that'll cause you problems. Can you leave that in the office? Got any coat racks that you can hang it on overnight?

Take it home any old way when you need to clean it. Rolling it carefully into a top box or tank bag isn't going to crease the hell out of it when you bring it back in. In fact, I'm not really sure why you can't do it every day.

Nothing wrong with decent textiles, I've crash tested a few of mine and only worn a proper hole through one jacket, and a tiny hole at that, the tiniest graze to show for it.

Our Merrycan cousins have the option to get the one piece Aerostich Roadcrafter suit.

You could actually wear business suit under that thing.

I looked into getting one a while back. Turned out a bit of hassle. They are not cheap, so that was a major drawback. Then getting the right size (US sizes are a pain), ordering and then getting through customs. Too much of a risk.

I have only ever seen one such suit for the European market (again many years ago) and when I looked that company appears no more. Nearest equivalent I could see is the Joe Rocket Survivor Suit.

Huh. I was going to say that BMW do a 1-piece textile suit, but it looks like they did do it. Discontinued in UKia, now it's leather onesies for RR power rangers, or import a textile one from Yankland. Mad

Get yourself a choob: https://www.trekmates.co.uk/index.php?route=product/category&path=154_148

Warm neck and stops the helmet strap getting moisturiser on it.

I also have to wear trousers and shirt for work..but for commuting I simply pull on some armoured overtrousers , boots and jacket. ..my shoes go in my rucksack. When I get to work I simply take the boots, jacket and overtrousers off, put my shoes on and then go sort my helmet hair in the toilet.

Job done.

Shoes live under my desk. You don't get helmet hair with dreadlocks...

I was curious so did a google.
There appears to be a BMW one piece suit at Pidcock Motorcycles online site.
It's on as a cover all suit with armour so I'm guessing not a rain suit one piece.

HTH Thumbs Up

P.S. I now can't say UKia without going into John McClain mode Very Happy Thanks for that.

Eh. If that's a Bufftm-by-another-name, then it's versatile but thin. I always carry a Bufftm, but as a wrapping-of-last resort to fill in for any balaclava, hat, neck roll or whatever else I've forgotten. It's better than nothing, but not as good as anything, at least in the fimbulvinter.
