Ello

So I'm thinking of getting my Dad a Kindle Fire HD, the larger 8/9 inch version.
Avoiding the obvious iPad route because they are far too expensive and the price only increases when you want a bigger screen, which will be required. The competition adds another £100 to price with what seems like little benefit.

My Dad is the sort that says " Google it" & "What have I seen him/her in before" all the way through a film Neutral

So IMDB, Google & Youtube are all essential for this to be worthwhile.
I'm not asking the mighty BCF to decide for me, purely pass opinion & feedback on the Kindle fire HD.
I've spent a few hours researching the Kindle and all it's features & to be honest it does far more than my Dad will ever know.
It has plenty of "Pro Kindle" features, but only 1 large negative, the fact it's hooked to the Amazon ecosystem which restricts the android app store.
Which to be honest would irritate geeky me, but this is for my computer illiterate Father Laughing
Overall though, it a brilliant piece of kit & far surpasses my expectations. (Have a look yourself)

The Kindle I'm after can be had for £180, so much cheaper than the competition with similar resolution & spec.
So what do you think?

Watching with interest, I'm pondering one for Mrs B.

Daughter has one and loves it. Always playing games and reading books (which can be downloaded aplenty if you know where).

If you want to read books, get a normal kindle, with the far far better display for purely reading books.

If you want to play games or browse the net, then buy an ipad.

The 8.9" Fire can be had for £179 delivered.

iPad mini 7.9" costs ~£249. iPad 2 9.7" is ~£329.

Can you explain to me, and I mean this sincerely, why I should pay more for the Apple devices? What do they do better, specifically, and from experience of both?

I have a refurbished original ipad for a very good price that does everything I use it for.

We also use a Samsung galaxy tab in work, and I have used a few other android based tablets.

Android may do the same thing as the ipad does, but imo, while apple products are quite expensive, they are generally good quality, decent, and noticeably better built than lower priced products.

Would I buy one at those prices? No I wouldn't. But conversely, I wouldn't buy any of the others at their prices either, I am still yet to use a tablet, that rivals the ipad in terms of build, display and touch screen quality.

And if we compare a pre-fingered Fire to a new iPad, how does that work out?

I was not talking about value, just quality. As I said, I would not pay new prices for the apple products, however, I wouldn't buy the android tablets either.

I don't "NEED" one, it's a nice to have, so I'm not going to buy something just to have one, ipad are well done, and this was a reasonable priced apple refurb.

No way I would pay a new price for one though

I have no doubts that the iPad is superior to the Kindle and other tablet rivals in many ways. Yet I'm sure each tablet has aspects that are better or more refined than the iPad demigod.

These mid range tablets offer great value for money & unless your dependent on a tablet for whatever reason, you wouldn't need to buy the top of the range models. The Nexus, Sony Tablet Z & the Kindle Fire offer near the same usability without the pricetag.

For a casual user, the iPad is overkill.
To me, buying a iPad for my Dad would be like building a i7 gaming Rig to play minecraft Laughing
These lower spec tablets have their own space in the market, not every hand need a ipad.

Agreed Thumbs Up
I have a laptop and a smartphone.
So a tablet to me is like these new smartwatches, great products but I have little use for them personally.

i had a play on one not 2 days ago,
at a tesco store, i was trying to find what printer cartridge my printer took,
my findings were the on screen key board was too close to a back key, so i ended up having to re-search the same thing about 4 times until i managed to type in a complete search without it sending me back to the main screen,
it initially took me a while to find the browser, (i have an android phone, and it wasnt where i expected it to be)

in the end it all became too much and i just gave up, went home and ordered a printer cartridge online,

being a kobo e book reader, and a stealer of all things copyrighted,
i wouldnt go for a kindle just out of spite, not that the fire has anything to with reading ebook, its the same reason i wouldnt buy an ipad/pod/mac/phone, or microsoft software, i just don't like anything that trys to restrict my usage in any way

Bought a nexus 7 for my little sister last year as a Christmas/birthday present, had a play on it before giving it to her and ended up keeping it for myself and buying her another one.

Gets most use when I'm at work (not the most intense job to say the least) or traveling about. Use it to watch films/netflix, play emulators, read books. Much lighter and easier to carry about than my laptop, which barely gets used anymore between using my tablet and smartphone.

It probably comes down to what Apps you can run on it.

There's a version of Cubase, some Propellerhead stuff, and a version of Guitar Rig for iPad. I don't think there's Android versions of the same. Not that I'd be wanting to twiddle with the above when I've fingers the size of a Scouse dockers. Touch control anything sounds great, but in practice always turns out to be something of a ballache, that it has me screaming for a real keyboard and mouse in no time.

I'll stick to laptops and PCs and save me money

Well, inB4 stinkwheel, what she really needs is a new netbook to compliment the perfectly functional EEE PC that I'm typing this on.

But you can't tell the little ladies what they want, bless 'em. She'll just use it for keeping knitting patterns and pictures of kitties on anyway. That's both sexist and accurate.

Just got my son a Hudl, fromTesco - £119, 7 inch screen, quad core processor, plenty of RAM, 16gb onboard memory, HDMI out, GPS, all the usual sensors and in your hand, it has that feel to it of a quality bit of gear.

Surprisingly good.
