Howd you get this in place to buy your first bike with a test drive? Even if you already had a bike and had tpo on other bikes, would sellers be happy with that? If you total it your not covered!

Cash in hand, don't do anything that might result in you having a claim made against you, or attracting the attention of the benevolent eye of our loving watch-lords.

A decent dealer will have insurance on the bikes for test rides. If you're not offered a test ride, question what you're getting in return for that price premium.

What about private? Would you want them to have insurance before letting them loose?

Want, yes, be bothered, not really, if the rider seems sensible and it was on the MID. Allowing the use of an uninsured vehicle is the same class of offence as using it, but worse things happen at sea.

And sorry, I didn't spot that you'll be on a provisionaL. You can probably forget getting a ride from a dealer then. Private, make it clear that you're a serious buyer, ask nicely and put cash in hand.

There are plenty of checks that you can do without even hitting the starter. And if a 125 starts easily from cold, goes up and down the gears, and stops with the brakes without rattling, rumbling, squealing, weaving or lurching, there's not much that can be wrong with it.

You may have to take a gamble on your first bike, that's one reason why I bought new - for a whole £720 delivered and registered. But it's a rational gamble as long as you avoid the likes of Vince Candelin trading as Vincan motorcycles, Cando Motorcycles, E-Two / E2 motorcycles or whatever he's calling himself this week. Wink

By the way, if you put a location in your profile, you may find someone local willing to help with your first purchase.

If you put a postcode in, you'll get a little dot on a map as well. Wink

£500 is optimistic for a good 'un, but not unachievable. You'll want to keep cash to hand, and be both patient and quick.

Scour Gumtree regularly and get in fast when a bargain comes up, and I mean within minutes or hours.

Another good wheeze is to keep track of eBay auctions for decent looking bikes that end near your price range, and contact the seller telling him that you've got cash in hand waiting if/when his buyer falls through. I got my Burgman that way, the seller was just so happy that someone had actually shown up. Thumbs Up

Oh yeah one thing... Leaving the guy the asking price for a test drive shows ur willing to pay the full price. How would that leave any negotiation? I always make an offer under what its going for, even if its worth it

Well, even if you've left the asking price in his hand as 'security', the test ride is going to highlight some little things that need attention isn't it?

I've bought and sold a few things in my time, and never once has the asking price been the minimum either way... (Unless I'm selling to someone I know.)
