I had sumo wheels built around original hubs. I bought a front and rear wheel from ebay, took all of the spokes off, flogged the rims and then had the hubs powdercoated and laced onto Excel rims.

Best advice I could give - shop around, choose a company carefully, price it all up before you start. My wheels look good but I could have spent the same money and got some Talons built.

I know it's expensive. The cost is in the new rims themselves and the adds up with the spokes etc. I had a quote from central wheel to build me some KMX SM wheels using the original hubs. I think the rims were over £100 a piece, but the cost of lacing them up was reasonable at £50 per wheel, so it was the parts that hurt cost wise.

If I do go down the route of an SM conversion on my 200 which is doubtful then I'd use either GPZ500 or NSR125 cast wheels and make up some spacers. I always thought that for a street SM bike cast wheels look cool, especially on bikes like the KTM Duke, Gilera Nordwest, Cagiva Supercity etc.

I was actually going to mention building wheels in Paddy's case.
For him, he'd end up with wheels likely worth a good chunk.

For a CR125 less so, so I'd be tempted to follow stevo's route and go for cast wheels, which also means tubeless etc.
You only need the spokes if you're going to be (ab)using the SM wheels off road, doing jumps on proper SM tracks etc. Otherwise, arguably cast are better.

Just keep the dirt wheels for green lane use? Much better generally for the muddy UK lanes.

Cast wheels seem to handle wheelie (ab)use fine on heavier bikes.
