..that looks like an open face helmet! I want the protection that a full-face helmet gives but I also want a retro-style open-face look.
Is it possible? Does it exist?

I think you misread. I want all the protection that a full-face helmet gives but I like the style of open-face helmets - but they won't do much to keep my teeth where they belong if I land face-down in a crash.

Think of it more as "I want to eat my cake and still have it". It will make more sense to you that way.

Sure, I forget the brand, but essentially they are an open face helmet but they happen to have a thin steel ring around where the bottom is, which acts as a crash bar.

Similarly open face but with a full face visor, you go face down, it MIGHT protect the bottom of your face. Or it might shatter and make you ugly(ier).

£40 just for the hoop and £350 for the lid which accepts it.

Not really an open face, but i've tryed one of these on before and they feel very open due to the huge visors

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=arai+tour+helmet&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=He2UUpPxCMa1hAfwyICwDw&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=1429&bih=735&dpr=0.9

Bloody expensive generally though, don't know if theres cheaper copies around Neutral

You could always buy a roof boxer.

Ride it open face.

Then just before you crash, or while you are flying through the air, you rotate the chin bar from the back to the front then continue flying through the air and crashing.

Its that simple!

So you want an open face helmet with a magic popout or invisible chinbar that keeps the wind and the weather off, but you want to look like you're wearing a flowerpot on your head?

Don't understand that personally.

I mostly wore an open face crash helmet, but lately have been wearing moto cross style helmets instead.

I think it's that have often means to eat. 'Have a snickers', 'have you had your dinner?'

So in that context you can't exactly eat your cake twice.

I think anyway...

That's an impressive helmet and there are some cheaper versions for around £230, but it doesn't give me an excuse to wear cool retro-style aviator goggles! Cool

Have you tried crashing into the ground face first in one? I have and it almost snapped my neck.

Want, do not want that price.

Can it really be that there isn't a cheaper equivalent? Half an our of Googling says no. It seems such an obvious and easy thing to produce though. Eh?

I haven't worn one - so maybe a totally redundant comment but

How often do you look down/appreciate that lower area in your peripheral vision. I can't help but think it sells for that price as a gimmick more than anything.

The main and only reason i'd totally avoid it personally is because it would probably give a face-full of wind blast when riding with the visor up, which I quite often do. Interesting concept either way though Thinking

I've never understood the appeal of open faced lids myself. My leathers often look like I've been out paintballing, rather than riding a bike and some of them bugs can smart a little through the leathers. I certainly wouldn't want to be hit in the face by them.
