I think I've caught the ghey....

Seriously looking at buying this

Tempted by the low insurance and high mpg.

You'll nod back at me won't you? Won't you?

Laughing

Seriously tho, any points to look for when inspecting these strange scootery machines? Never bought a scoot before.

I worked on these and their bigger brothers in the early 2000's, they are quite reasonable, they do like all scoots need belts/rollers etc around the 10k mark if I remember correctly, they are inherently reliable though.

If you look closely, you can see that this particular example has the optional extra prostate massager built into the seat.

Cheers, a 125 made by a decent brand with a years test, seems a bargain for 450 quid. I can only suppose the gay image puts most people off.

I've been bikeless for 3 years tho, I'm on the insurance for my sisters zzr but I don't like to rinse someone elses bike and can't afford a fun bike of my own.

I think Rogerborg has got himself similar to one of these, a Burgman 400.

Cheap as possible without being a liability ie chinese grenade. More concerned with running costs that outright price tbh. Ie looking for something with cheap parts, and good mpg.

Looking around and it seems like even lowly cg's in shit state are commanding way more than 450. I'm sure this thing will be dog slow, but I'm not in it for the fun, more like dirt cheap transportation. Service parts on wemoto are looking very cheap too which is a plus.

Max normal trip will be about 30 miles, which I used to do on my 125 with no problems.

Just noticed it's rocking double discs up front Laughing

After riding a scooter almost every day for the past 2.5 years, I would say a proper bike would be a better bet, particularly as "Winter is Coming."

You mentioned the low MPG offered by the scooter. Yes this is true, a 125 scooter will definitely give you good fuel economy; I get at least 90mpg from mine and thats going "flat out" a lot of the time (Honda claim 130mpg for mine which I think would be achievable if I were riding between 30-40mph everywhere.

Although; however good the fuel consumption is, it will not be any better than a geared 4t 125 - in some cases it may even be slightly worse due to the inability to switch to a higher gear to keep RPM down.

Scooters are also covered in plastic meaning either hefty repair bill when you slide it down the road, or very noticeable crash damage (I chose the second option). Although, obviously the high plastic content does mean you are very well protected from the elements.

However, the main reason for my recommendation for a "proper bike" is stability. On a conventional bike, you straddle it and are sat somewhere between the wheels; a reasonably stable position. On a scooter, you are sat on top of the bike and directly above the rear wheel, which in my experience, leads to much less control over the bike should you loose traction. There have been times when I have come off my scooter at a very low speed due to bad rode conditions/ice and I personally think that, had I been riding a proper bike I would have had a much higher chance of saving it.

So, that is what I believe to be an informed opinion on scooter riding. Saying all that though, I do still like my scooter, it's brilliantly easy to ride, particularly when filtering - no gears to faff around with (although it's not the narrowest of bikes, and the one your looking at looks even less so). Maybe the lack of gears will be good for you just to get used to riding again as you have been away from it for 3 years.

Anyway, ultimately the choice is yours obviously.

At the right price, I'd have one in the blink of an eye. They afford good weather protection and are ideal for short commutes.
People that denounce such transport are in denial of their true sexuality.

A few weeks ago, when my sister re-insured her ZZR600 she put me on as a named rider. Taken it out twice so far and all was well. Was a little wobbly in town at first, but a 30 mile ride and it all came back pretty quickly. Mr. Green

The ZZR is a pretty forgiving "big-bike" I think, ride it below 7k and everything is very relaxed. I miss mine from days of yore.

Thanks for your input Karma

£450 for that looks like a good price.

I've also just bought similar, a yamaha YP250. They are not cool at all, but do the job perfectly. I just wanted a basic commuter to get me through the winter and I've got used to having your legs stuck out in front of you.

The other advantage is that I never have to carry a chain/lock around with me anymore as no-one under the age of 40 would give it a second glance!

Weather protection is indeed great. I'm still in my kevlar jeans, even on damp days. Thumbs Up

Handling, as monteme0 notes, is comical. Soooo slow on roundabouts, no confidence. Dull as ditchwater, even with a mighty 30-something bhp. On a 125, you'll be treating the throttle as an on/off switch. There's also a bit of getting used to using brake and throttle together in lieu of a manual clutch's biting point.

Hell to work on, it's taken me hours to figure out how to even get the tupperware off to get at the oily bits. A "simple" rear brake pad change involved taking the exhaust off, which snapped a stud and that was my weekend gone trying to get access to drill it out.

And yet... and yet... so easy to just jump on and go. We've not had a bad autumn yet, but even so it's kept me on two wheels when I've been tempted to take the car a few times.

Too soon to call it yet, but at that price, it's got to be worth trying out just for the experience.

I'll nod, but then I nodded at peds even before I caught the metrosex.

make sure you research the brake rigup on the handlebars if you intend to take it out in winter, I had a honda scooter a @125, the brakes wer joined together so if you pulled the back brake it pulled the back a bit too, Not what you want on ice n snow

Just looked at insurances and it would actually only be another 20 quid or so to insure my CB500 that sitting in a mates barn compared to the 125s.

Only thing is said CB, while it was mot'd a few years ago is an absolute rat-bike with no value. Any money spent on it, to get it roadworthy is never going to be seen again... Also lacks ignition switch, clocks, proper headlight etc etc

also happens to be geared to top out at 90, with resulting grunt. Laughing

That price looks good. If you are worried about stability, have a look around for the SH125. Same fuel economy, but it uses much bigger wheels and you sit more-or-less between them, so it has a similar feel to a motorcycle. Older ones can be had for reasonable money, I think. I had a 2004 for a few months. I paid something like £800 for it, from a dealer.

The disadvantage of the bigger wheels is reduced storage. The under-seat area is tiny.

check the transmission case they tend to lose paint over time and look ,essy

its the 125cc leader engine so will be reliable my old runner had 25000 on it when i sold it without issue

not sure if the x9 125 came with the elitric stand or not but make sure it is working

and check the exhaust as if its in a mess they are pricey to replace genuine about 400 quid and aftermarket 20-300 for a decent one

When I was working on them it was the 500 cc one that had the electric stand, needed it too, must have weighed nine billion tons.

Yeah I lent it to smiley and he was riding it a year or two ago on the road for a while. Yup it sounds like some sort of might bass cannon on idle. I've never actually rode it on the road, kinda looking forward to ragging it around the town in an antisocial manner.

12.5k is very low mileage for an 11 year old scooter. I'd wonder if it was laid up somewhere for a while. I do about 10k a year on my scooter. Non-classic scooters are strictly utility vehicles, I'd raise my eyebrows at anything that didn't do at least 2-3k a year.

I find the handling of scooters is better than big bikes at lower speed. They change direction with very little effort, and the low centre of gravity makes them very easy to roll into a turn with bodyweight rather than countersteer for quick reaction. High speed handling is generally dreadful, very wobbly if the wheels are small, and usually wallowing and weaving if hitting bumps while cornering at speed. Neither suspension nor frame stiffness are set up for it. An exception should be the new Honda Integra, since that's got the same frame as the other NC700s.

But I wouldn't want an X9. 170kg is a lot for a 14bhp motor, and it's a chunky bike, more awkward for filtering. I'd prefer to see 130kg for a water-cooled 125.
