its winter, so its too cold for me to keep polishing the rust off my chrome exhaust. so, is there a way to reliably treat the chrome surface in order for me to apply some black BBQ paint to it?

or is this a daft idea?

exhaust looks like it has herpes.

Note:
Grinder does 18500rpm
Those buffing cups don't like to go over 3600rpm

Either use an actual buffing tool or wear a few thick jumpers. You will get riddled with needles.

While you're at it you'll need a full respirator as the fumes from the paint are also toxic.

I'm not sure "didn't die" is always a suitable measure of success Wink .

I stripped the paint off a swingarm using one of those cups in an angle grinder while wearing combat trousers.

They were nailed to my shins with short spiky bits of metal by the time I'd finished. Deeply unpleasant.

I think I mentioned it in my project thread, but I was having a shower after stripping the CD frame with one of them and found 2-3 wires embedded about an inch in my stomach. Was wearing a pretty thick hoodie too. Laughing

I'm not saying you'll kill yourself or any kittens in the vicinity.
The last time I used one of these I was wearing a fleece and some fireproof overalls (the sort they make fireproof by just adding three times as much material) and felt a bit of an itch. Looked down and I'd turned into a porcupine. Would have probably caused some pain if I'd been wearing my home PPE of trackies and an old shirt.

Would a power drill suffice? Don't have a grinder.......

I quite like the sandpaper flap wheels you get for drills.
You also get wire brushes for them

Personally I wouldn't use a heavy duty angle grinder wire brush as pictured below - I would expect some reasonable scratches etc. I use them for clearing up heavy rust on vans before welding and the like.

On that, I've never had a problem. I'm sure the ones I've bought have been sold for angle grinders. Saying that, more than once I've set fire and melted my own clothing using a normal grinder disc.

Brick acid, cheap as chips but needs handled with care followed by a few coats of Pot black.
