PostPosted: 00:09 - 21 Nov 2013    Post subject: Bikes You Can Ride on an A2 License (List) + A2 License info Reply with quote

A lot of people have been asking what bikes they can ride with an A2 license, so i decided to put a list together with all the bikes I know and researched that can be ridden with an A2 license and some information that covers most of the common questions asked to do with the A2 license.

Important A2 License Info':
-You must have completed your theory test, CBT and module 1 and 2 tests on a motorcycle that is minimum 395 cc with a power output of at least 25 kW but not exceeding 35 kW and doesn't exceed the power to weight ratio stated below.
-Be a solo motorcycle
-Have a power to weight ratio no more than 0.2kW/kg
-Produce no more than 35kw/47bhp engine power
If the engine power of the motorcycle has been restricted to fit sub-category A2, the normal unrestricted power can’t be more than double its new restricted power (94bhp).
-You must be 19 in order to attain your A2 license
-An A2 license is a full UK motorcycle license but with restrictions. So when you do insurance quotes you would select full UK motorcycle license and then add the appropriate restrictions as a modification or if your motorcycle already meets the requirements of an A2 bike you do not need to add any restrictors to your bike or inform your insurance
-If you've held your A2 license for 2 years you can then go on to do your full A category license by re-sitting the module 1 and 2 on a more powerful bike which then allows you to ride any motorbike you like.

It's funny that you commented, as it was your comment on another post that lead me to create this list Smile

Haha I did think it was an amazing coincidence that I'd mentioned it quite recently! Unfortunately I was too lazy to do it myself Smile

So when filling applications for insurance companies online you click 'full uk motorcycle license' and then go on to add the suitable restrictors under modifications. If your bike is already meets the requirements for an A2 license then there's no need to declare any restrictions

That's one way of doing it, if you don't mind ruling out many insurers or paying way over the odds.

If an insurer only gave me the choice of "full" or "provisional" license, as most of them do, then I'd have no hesitation in checking "full" and then not declaring a "modification" that could triple the quote for no other reason than because they are idiots.

Much as I do appreciate your effort, the DSA's list is probably definitive, for this reason: what do you imagine that insurers and John Law are going to use?

+1

I didn't declare mine on the insurance, seemed like a lot of hassle for no benefit. They'll either charge me more or just go "cool story" and if I do write it off at some point, I doubt they'll care that the bike wasn't going quite as fast as it should have been.

Don't declare them on your insurance and don't fit them to your bike. Mr. Green

Thought it would be best to include what you're meant to do, it's completely up to the individual wether or not they have there restrictors in. In my case if I have restrictions as a modification on my policy it doesn't affect my insurance quotes a penny, so I may as well tell them the bike is restricted to save headache in the events of a claim.

Out of interest, what evidence could you produce that you told the broker about the restriction, and that they told the underwriter?

Good point, not much. In fact none really accept your word . I'd just rather be safe than sorry and hope the insurer was told especially as it makes no difference to my quote.

I have a piece of paper and a receipt from the garage saying they fitted it and a lovely QR-coded sticker on the frame with "35kW" in big letters.

Same here.

I once had a company refuse to quote me because my bike was 'modified' with an alarm.

I haven't checked... I expect if it does it will only be to the website for the restrictor manufacturer or the dealer.

does anyone know how the 70kw street triple thing works? Does it have to come from the factory like that or can you 'double
restrict it? Not many people can afford it new at 19 Shocked

We don't know, as it hasn't been tested by the tools of the State yet.

If the 70kW striple is mechanically restricted - like with the cams or valves - so that it can't make more than a 70kW bench bullshit figure, then it seems reasonable.

However, if they've simply slapped a different ECU on there to bring it down to 70kW, and the 35kW restriction means swapping that out for yet another different one, then it would make a mockery of the system. Good.

There was someone on here claiming that he'd been told by some tool of the State that double-restricting was OK. As in, nobble the bike down to 70kW, get it dynoed at that, then nobble it again down to 35kW.

This is such an utterly ridiculous suggestion for anyone with half an ounce of common sense to make that it almost seems plausible that a DSA / DVLA / Dibble would have said it. Wink

But really, we won't know until the prosecutions start happening.

Well if you can get something in writing saying you have permission to do it, or it's in line with regulation, then it's certainly worth a go. Would be a lot of fun pulling that out in court.
