I've gone White and it's not my age, another winter on the road and as usual the road salt is turning my textile gear a grey shade of white (down the front only), my bike is looking similar but obviously i can wash that. Apart from drying out at the weekend and giving my jacket and trousers a bash to which clouds of bellowing white dust appears - How can i still look cool at Captain Jaspers with a hangover on Sunday Morning when all those Sunday riding queens come out pristine and look down on me like i'm some sort of gutter rat?

I throw my textiles into the washing machine (after taking out the armor) once or twice a year. It's actually recommended, apparently because road crud in the Cordura will draw water passed the Gore Tex middle layer if you let it get too dirty.

Check the label on your stuff. Some gear needs special detergent, such as NikWax, and others don't.

I've always thought pristine riding kit makes you look like a bellend and scruffy riding kit looks cool.

Cool isn't shiny and unused, cool is battered and worn. Purposeful. Like you do stuff and haven't got time for mincing around cleaning up afterwards. Cool

This is the only way I justified throwing myself down the road in my brand new 1 piece the first time I wore it.

And pretty much every time afterwards, too. I just wish I was one of those people you see at trackdays with the scuffed up leathers that are mental fast, unfortunately I'm not, I just seem to be attracted to tarmac.

Gave mine a wee scrub earlier. hot water in the bath, washing powder and a srubbing brush and just set about it. rinsed off then rinsed off again with hot water from the shower to get rid of any soap and ringed until damp and fired on the radiator - turning every 1.5 hours.

Same, but unfortunately I'm too fat to even be one of those people in battered leathers you see in the briefing at the start of the day and think they must be fast.

This x1000. Not that you should judge a book by its cover, but I would probably react more favourably to someone who looks fresh off some Mondo safari than someone clad in gear so shiny it looks like its come out fresh from a womb.

Nowadays appearance seems like yet another arena in which to compete with the Joneses and its refreshing to see someone who can just throw something on and get on wih it.

So keep your salt-stained gear and ride. Theres a reason why Barbour makes those heavily distressed Steve McQueen replica jackets and sells them for astronomical sums.

That said, function is the priority. If the dirt is compromising the protective qualities of your gear, do whatever you need to keep it going, appearances be damned.
