Hi i Have a Yamaha Xt125r and i want to put my canvas panniers on it so that i can take my tent and sleeping bag along with me. However i am unsure about the safety of them sitting over the heat shield of the exhaust. Is it safe to do so or do these things get to hot?

these are my panniers

this is the best picture i have of my exhaust https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc3/1456585_709729552370569_609138899_n.jpg

I wouldn't use them to carry a tent / sleeping bag - I'd strap them to the back of the bike personally - you should be able to strap them securely without the panniers.
Of course, panniers are useful for carrying other stuff Smile.

If the panniers are touching something hot, I'd make something to hold them away from it.

yeah It probably would be a better idea to strap the sleeping bag at least to the back. I like the oven glove idea as well, i have a proper set from a restaurant i used to work at... that i borrowed Wink

Personally I'd still go for an air gap over direct contact.

I've got some overgloves with a burnt hole in somewhere (maybe something hot left on them on a surface?) to show why it may not be ideal Smile.

well i do enjoy attempting to make things, and i don't really like the idea of being followed by smoke. I shall see what i can put together, if not ill just strap it all to the top. plenty of time after all.

try and sit the panniers just higher than the exhausts then use a some bungees on the grab handles to make them come inwards towards the seat, trying to make them avoid the exhaust?

You could always try heat wrap/bandage around the exhaust bit that'd be nearest to the pannier. Not pretty but would do the job. Slightly less Heath Robinson than oven gloves but same idea.

Or knock up a heat shield thingy yourself, again going Heath Robinson approach.

BTW I understand to make contents waterproof if you get large tupperware boxes in the pannier. Although this might actually restrict storage (no pushing stuff into corners).

If I wanted waterproof, I'd either go for a cover or use a 'dry bag' as a liner.

You can fix a Givi top case to an XT125r with a specific fitting kit.

Doesnt look as cool as soft panniers, but more waterproof.

If you do decide to go with the soft bag approach, then something like this

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10M-HEAT-WRAP-EXHAUST-MANIFOLD-plus-10-CABLE-TIES-30cm-1022C-/260851017629?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3cbbeea79d

will look a little better than a few oven gloves and tie wraps.

thanks again for the replies Smile Im not a great fan of top boxes, but ill look into getting one if all else fails haha. The heat proof webbing looks like the best shot to me, but im going to see if i can fashion myself a little frame for them first.

The back section of the XT125 exhaust doesn't get really really hot, (unlike the cat and front section of the manifold)

Id expect that the combination of webbing wrap and heavy cotton panniers will be fine.

Look for dry bags made for canoeing and camping. Theyre completely waterproof when you fall out of a canoe, so should be fine for your bike. Around a tenner on ebay.

Make sure your sleeping bag is in one. Sleeping in a soggy sleeping bag is not a nice expierience.

Not exhaust wrap. Technology has moved on folks.

Use a bit of silicone trivet or baking sheet on top of the exhaust.

Or stitch some silicone oven liner to the back of the pannier (they sell rolls of it in lakeland plastics).

hmmm, I share this dilemma with my '05 Hornet.

The exhaust is to one side but right under the seat so the panniers would be resting on the silencer.

I already have a top box and tank bag, but wanted more storage for when me and the missus go away on the bike (she expects 25kg allowance whenever travelling Shocked )

Fit a carbon can. Doesn't transmit enough heat to melt stuff.

Or a really loud one, the stainless micron on my VFR can be touched with your bare hands if it's run with the removable baffle removed.

Or just have a rack that goes around it?
My KTM has naturally got the exhaust high (the original with cat got stupidly hot, the titanium 'race' can less so), but the pannier rack holds stuff away so it's fine.

It's a stainless Micron that's on it.

I might and try and make an arm which bolts on where the rear grab handle is to hold the bag just far enough away from the can.

I'll just have to remember not to store the beer in that side!

Did you ever come up with a solution? My mates and I are off for a jolly round the UK next summer, it was originally just a weekend to Wales, but now it's about a week over that way, then another week up to the Lake district.

I'm doing it on my TTR 250, which has a high level exhaust too. I want throw-overs so I can take the bags from bike to bike. And they look cooler and may encourage me to take less stuff.
