So ive been going to the gym whenever im not on shift, opted for the powerlifting route rather than bodybuilding. In just over a month (forgot to weigh myself at the start) ive managed to maintain my weight give or take a few lb but drop my body fat + body fat mass. but my BMI is about the same each time and ive still got a gut. what do i need to do to lower it?!

Google how to cut fat and there will be lots of websites telling you how to keep your muscle but get the fat down. Gradual dieting and a varied workout will help do this.

bmi is not a true representation of an individuals fitness. Go by body fat. Lower your body fat to around 12-15 and you should be fit enough.

BMI is bullshit for anyone who actually does any working out. I'm on the upper limit of the recommended BMI (24.9) but there's no way I'm half a kilo from actually being overweight.

The quickest way to lower your BMI is to grow taller Wink

BMI is bollocks for those building muscle as it is a measure of weight vs height. The body fat reading is more important, but be warned those machines aren't great at measuring it. The reading depends a lot on how well hydrated you are, so day to day it can shift a lot.

It says you've lost 11kg of body fat. That's about 84,700 kcal. So that works out at a loss of 3025kcal per day. Which is about the same as eating nothing for 4 weeks and running 10-12 miles 7 days a week.

^ = same BMI

it's utter garbage, don't measure any success by bmi.

BMI is only a rough generalised guideance scale - don't focus on it too much or it can become unhelpful, as with many people ending up getting eating disorders attempting to get the 'perfect number'.

If you're someone attempting to gain muscle its even further redundant, its based on your average height, average weight person and their general health - it won't factor in muscle weight or the rest if you work out heavily.

You could always lower your BMI by getting taller Wink

On topic do not worry. As said above BMI should not be taken in isolation. According to BMI the England rugby team that won the world cup were all obese.

Your consistently lowering bodyfat and thus increase in muscle would suggest you're "on the right track".
If you want to lose more weight, it'll be a case of eating less.
HOWEVER, that will likely mean losing more muscle.

BMI is merely height to weight. So you have to lose weight or gain height.

I'd stick with what you're doing - if those figures are even a bit accurate, you're not doing bad. Nothing wrong with a high BMI if it's muscle - unless you want to be a long distance runner or something anyway.
25% body fat is still a fair bit for a man - in the low teens I still had a bit of a belly left.

I'm a massive fan of core bodyweight work outs with a bit of cardio for the fat burning, don't really lose any muscle mass doing it but I find for me it really helps lose body fat.

Going through this exact thing right now. I discovered a while back that BMI was just some random number for those lucky people who were naturally weedy.

My BMI is currently 34 however, my fat % (after a year long diet/exercise program) is now at 17.9%. Still a bit to go right enough.

My problem is now that I've gained a load of muscle in my torso in it's sitting under a layer of stubborn fat so my belly looks just as bad as before Rolling Eyes typical!

I think the tell tale sign is dropping sizes in clothes.

Don't think it as being over weight, think of it as being under tall.

It's all about the diet, 90% of the time it is diet diet diet, but not a none fat one a healthy one, eat a lot a day at regulated times, about 4 maybe 5 meals a day, but this is more for building muscle which I've been doing since I was 7 years old, paid off for me at 6- 7% body fat.

Let me know if you need help with anything Smile

If I should add too, BMI is bullshit, I'm classed as overweight as I'm 5'5 tall at nearly 10 stone, but muscle weights more than fat.

BMI is a comedy measure for gangly hermaphrodites.

Unless you are built like a 12 year old girl, ignore it.
