Decided that Honda's paint work sucks the fat one, and that selling the bandit instead of using it through winter was a terrible idea. So might be looking at a Fazer 600.
Have emailed a seller to see if they still have theirs for sale. 51 plate £950 ONO at 26k Miles.
Anything I should look out for with these? And also am I likely to get a decent 1 for under £1000?

Check that the exhaust headers are ok. They aren't stainless steel as standard and have the tendency to rot.

I had a mk1 Fazer as an all year round commuter.

It was a very good bike. Good on fuel with a decent (200 mile) range. The camchain on mine started to rattle on cold start-up at about 38,000 I think.

Good brakes, blue spot calipers.

OE systems rot out, try to buy with a stainless system. Inlet rubbers perish. -1 on the front sprocket makes a nice difference.

My main gripe with mine, and the reason for sale was the gearbox. Second to third used to clunk and it really wound me up. Maybe it was just mine, I don't know.

I'd have another, but a mk2 with the prettier headlights that actually work.

Been riding a 2003 Foxeye Fazer 600 for just over a year now, commuting every day into London, rain or shine. Great all round bike really.

Yep, the stock pipes are mild steel, the 4-into-1 on mine underneath the engine was riddled with holes. Still, for 10 year old bike wasn't bad going. Picked up a full stainless system inc decent end can and gaskets from Motard for £240 ish. So not the end of the world.

The mk1 'boxeye' fazers have a small fuel tank, crappy headlights and slightly naff mirrors, compared to the later foxeye models. There are headlight mods you can do and the mirrors are interchangeable with the later ones.

Check for any sign of drops. Often a newbie's bike, so quite likely. Scuffs on bar ends, cam covers, pegs. Check fairing for cracks, especially around indicator stalks. Check mirror fold down and remain fairly rigid - the hinge is a welded rivet that often snaps and gets bodged with nut'n'bolt that never remains tight, leading to flappy mirrors.

Check for sticking brakes, especially the back ones.

Gear box can be clunky, especially 1st into 2nd. Can be improved with some decent Castrol oil, but it'll never be silky smooth like a Honda.

Ultimately, most of the above is not a huge issues and can be dealt with fairly cheaply (excepting a shagged gear box). If it's in reasonable nick £950 is probably about right. If you spot any of the above, just barter lots.

They all clunk, like all old yam gearboxes Thumbs Up

lights are shit, but that's about it for a no thrills commuter.

Tut Tut That Sir, is no Excuse. Very Happy

Upgrade the bulbs and they are OK. I did that on the ThunderCat, which have/had spunk for lights, and made at least a 60% improvement.

If you are using any bike/car then the lights should be as bright as you can get them. (Exceptions are lame/cheap Chinese and old classics that have stupid lamp specs)

Mine has HID'S, still shit compared to a zx6r etc, they have a terrible charging system aswell.

^^ Thumbs Up

I think all Pre-War (Gulf War Smile ) bikes have shit charging. As in 'those-days' the systems were only 'just' getting accustomed to electric starters.
Now we have heated grips, GPS, Heated Gear to supply power to.

Not long ago (on the evolutionary scale) bikes only had to make enough juice for a single spark.
In 'those-days' Hard Men, who had no need for such things as creature comforts, rode bikes. Smile
