Hi all,
Got a rattle on my FZR and for the life of me, can't work out what's going on!

It only appears at idle and up to about 4k and started a couple month ago.

I've changed the Cam Chain Tensioner with little success.

I've left a video below to of the sound. I was convinced it was cam chain until i changed the tensioner and nothing changed.

Cannot tell from that video.
Fzr's are notorious for Exup valve rattle.
Pulling on the cables manually is an easy test.
Worthwhile servicing the valve regardless.

That sounds much more like a carb problem.

Are you running a K&N air filter? If so,has it got a jetting kit fitted to compensate?

How many turns out from seated are the air screws?

If you spray WD40 around the inlet manifolds,do the engine revs rise?

Can you get a clean tickover?

Has the engine been serviced recently?

When were the carbs last balenced?

Are all of the cylinders firing ok? (throw some water on the downpipes)

Not conclusive from the video, but I'd be starting at the header-to-cylinder head joins and working my way down the exhaust looking for leaks and rattles.

Thanks for the replies

Haven't checked the EXUP, I'll have a look at that.

The carbs are all standard, standard airbox and haven't been touched from the factory although i do have restrictions in (Washers).
Idles very steady.
Do have a problem with a slight misfire on one cylinder from cold but goes after a few seconds.
Been serviced a couple months ago and the carbs could probably do with being balanced now the restrictions are in.

I'll take a look at the exhaust too

Thanks guys!

Does sound to me as if the bike is running roughly on maybe 2 cylinders out the four, check the carbs, misfiring will make the clutch rattle, the shafts inside rattle and all sorts, your video wasn't very long though really for a decent opinion.

Get clutch rattle too! I'll get the carbs balanced and checked soon. Sounds like the culprit Smile

Video wasn't long because i was running on what was left in the pump and it was coughing.

Thanks

Thanks for all the help guys, Been in the shed all day and sorted it Thumbs Up
Turns out it was the EXUP valve that just needed adjusting, Honestly didn't think that it would cause a sound like that but there you go.

Thank you for the follow up.
The misfire at initial start up is a classic sign of valve clearance issues, time for a compression test or cam cover off.

My FZR400RR 3TJ sounded like it was dying. It was in fact just the EXUP valve bushes which had worn meaning that it was loose inside the housing. Sounded surprisingly like a big end bearing or similar.

^^^ This!

I had visions of having to rip the engine apart after the tensioner didn't work! Bloody things!
