Got a friend who is having some bad luck with his PayPal account and asked me to see if anyone else has had similar issues. I know a few on here have had some problems with PayPal as well.

He's basically reported some fraud activity on his account, reported it to the police and got a crime reference number and then reported it to PayPal with the crime number.

PayPal have done their usual tactics of blaming everything on the PayPal account holder and shut his account down so, "We don't incurr any financial losses" or words to that effect.

He has appealed and they've refused to re-open his account.

I told him that I have several PayPal accounts for different businesses but all in the same name/address, just different email accounts and business names and that it doesn't matter.

I told him to just open a new PayPal account with a new bank account and ignore it, as the issue is with that particular account, not him as a person.

This got me thinking though...

To someone with several accounts like myself and many others, would PayPal consider closing down all accounts linked to you because of something like this? I told him that I've never heard of this happening myself and can't see it to be the case but you just don't know with these cunts.

Someone swindled 400 odd quid from my PP account. Same story with them, blaming me, refusing to do anything but they didn't close my account, just refused to refund the money. Went to my bank and also to the Financial Ombudsman Service who sent PP a nice letter that made them change their tune. Although I prematurely called the FOS (supposed to go through them as a last resort) it worked. Thumbs Up

Have you checked the paypal terms and conditions?
I thought you were only allowed one account per person - though presumably allowed more on businesses presuming you have multiple bank accounts in the business.

I'm pretty sure it'll say in their terms and conditions they can do as they will.

However, yes; your mate is probably ok to open a new account.
However, if I was out of pocket and it was not my fault (how was the account used, exactly?) then I'd be making a big fuss about getting the money back.
If it was my fault, I'd probably still be making a fuss Smile.

You're definitely allowed more than 1 PayPal account per person.

Example:

Web design business
Ebay business

There's no getting round the fact they are 2 different companies and need 2 different accounts.

He was drop shipping some items on the account and he didn't like what was going on so he did some digging and it turned out to be a scam. He reported it to the police and told PayPal, who basically shut his account down after some checking of their own.

Not saying they can't shut the account down or were wrong to do so, as they're a private company and have their own rules.

He seems to think that he can't open another account because the issues are to do with him as a person not the account. I told him that they're nothing to do with him, just the account.

Like if I had issues on my ebay PayPal account, I wouldn't expect them to look at my web design account and shut that down.

Clearly PP think something is not right about your friends claim...
Maybe they checked the ip address used to make the purchase or funds transfer....

As, I speak to people on a regular basis who have had their paypal accounts compromised and see refunds back from them within 10 days with no problems.

When you fraud activity. Just what do you mean?

That's two different businesses which would be considered separate entities to the person.

For a personal account at least, a bank account can only have one unique paypal account apparantly.

I do have two different paypal in my personal name as it goes. But when I checked, it said you weren't allowed I believe.

He was drop shipping some items, he paid for them to these guys and they didn't return any emails/questions. After a week or so, he realised something was wrong, so he did some digging and found it to be a scam.

Once he realised this, he reported it to the police/PP... he's a bit of a nub when it comes to PP, police weren't arsed (naturally) and PP decided to shut his account down over it.

He's now battling with them to get his account back but reckons if he opens another they won't let him.

I told him he should open one as a business account because PP say in their own terms, you can have 1 personal and 1 business (if you want to open more business accounts, just ask).

Where does the fraud come in?

Did anyone else authorise money going in to or out of his account?

Did he pay for them using paypal?

Were the items sold using paypal?
If so; did he refund using paypal too?

So its NOT FRAUD then....
That is when a unknown 3rd party uses the account.

So he had been buying fake goods and got shafted.

He should simply have gone for a dispute and non receipt of goods....

Oh let me guess it was a personal payment as well.....

Seriously surprised that the police gave him a CRN, maybe they did not quite understand what he was saying....
Or was the report via Action Fraud. Which isn't actually a CRN.

I don't know the fine details of it, just PayPal fucked him off and shut his account. He's a bit of a techno tard himself, not good at explaining himself.

He wanted to know if anyone else had similar issues, he's talking about using stealth accounts, which I told him he's a tard.

Seems that PP can shut you down entirely, like if they wanted to close me down totally, they can shut all my accounts.

What's "drop-shipping"?

Where you sell things, but never physically see them.
The third party company ships them out for you from their warehouse.
So I could sell torches, say; instead of buying in 100 torches and going through the effort of storing them, sending them out etc, instead I use a drop shipping company.
Most of the money will go to them, but there's no upfront costs for you, so you can sell a lot more spending a lot less time doing it.

Of course, there tends to be pretty fierce competition on ebay with profits in the pence for some things - I wouldn't be surprised if some actually started losing money for a bit when ebay changed to taking their tithe out of postage too!

There's money in drop shipping if done correctly, I do it myself.

I've told him to either plead with PayPal about opening another account or he will just have to find an alternative method.

It's all getting complicated now and it's not really my concern, just wanted to see if anyone had a similar experience.

I've personally never had an issue with PayPal but it's interesting that they would look at all your accounts if anything went wrong, I didn't think they would do that.

I have a friend who turns over £2million a year on ebay, imports from China by the container load and has 8 different ebay accounts (you're allowed to do this if you sell in different niches) and to think that PayPal could shut him down if anything happened, his business is doomed.

Again; paypal can do what the hell they want, it's their business.

I'm presuming with a turnover of £2m it's business rather than personal accounts for your friend Smile.

However, yes; if they decided the business was a high risk with a turn over of £2m, I'm sure they would consider closing all accounts.

Yes, of course, it's business. I don't own any personal PayPal accounts myself either, all business accounts.

Of course they can. Just like any bank can close your accounts if they want too.
These days with new stricter money laundering regulations. A very close eye is kept on ALL accounts.
If they feel there maybe a issue. Its lock it down and then start asking questions.

What he has to be careful of is if PP decide to place a fraud marker on his credit file (often you will never see it, as its via Cifas and only for banks info) This means he will have no end of issues getting any credit or opening bank accounts.
