Hi folks,

I went to remove my back wheel but couldnt get the axle out because the padock stand was blocking it, and its a bannana swingarm so I couldnt put the stand further up.

So I knocked the axle back in and put the tensioner screws back in, I tensioned one up a bit, then the other, and tensioned the one on the chain-side up till it was just right (about 25mm play in the center of the chain).

Unfortunately I then discovered that whilst that one was right, the other one wasnt even touching the swingarm properly. Tightening it was very hard and made the chain too tight.

So now the chain is the correct tension, but one of the tensioner bolts isnt even touching the swingarm.

Wtf?

Are the tensioner brackets misaligned or something?

Bike is a yamaha szr660.

You need to start again.

You have to adjust the tensioners together, as they both effect tension. So if you get the tension to the right place with one while the other isn't adjusted it will majorly effect it when you adjust the other.

Get it to about the same place while loose, then do each adjuster up a turn or a half turn at a time.

Ahh okay cheers. Will sort that out tomorow.

Only other thing is that when I was trying to remove the rear wheel, before realising it wasnt going to be possible anyway, I couldnt get the chain off the rear sprocket. I assumed this would be possible simply by loosening the chain tension completely?
Do I need to split the chain instead?

Best not to split the chain, even if you do have a split link.

Loosening the chain of completely should allow you to get it off the sprocket.

Hi

To just remove the wheel you should not need to touch the chain adjusters. Once the rear wheel spindle is out then you can move the wheel forward and lift the chain off.

Generally I avoid touching the chain adjusters except for adjusting the chain. Once you have got the wheels in line then make sure you turn each adjuster the same amount (ie, count the number of flats on the bolts / nuts that you turn each by).

All the best

Keith

The manual specified to remove the tensioners, though I do see the logic that it isnt neccessary.

Unfortunately the paddock stand can only be attatched OVER the rear axle due to it being a bannana swingarm, which basically makes the whole task impossible.

Highly annoying.
