 |
|
So, for some reason, my work colleague's 19 year old son has decided he wants a Dragstar, I mean he's properly enthusiastic about it.
As the firm's resident bike expert, his dad has asked me to do some research and it would appear they are a sensible choice, unless you know different.
Looks like I might get roped into looking at one over the weekend, so is there anything model specific I should be watching out for, or any faults that are endemic to these machines?

PS his tassle jacket and arseless chaps are on order ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

Paddys brother had one.
There's photo's on here of me dragging pegs on it
Riding position is pretty damn weird. Engine was gutless. Brakes pretty poor. Very lazy handling - turn in was slow, low speed control was poor, wouldnt want to filter on it. Gearbox was fucking terrible (although its probbably due to setup) weighed a lot. Steve did manage to get a realy shit wheelie out of it from a standstill.
Didn't go wrong for him however, so can't be all bad if you're into that sort of thing.
Edit; found the photo

All good so far, Dad will like the fact it's no sports bike and difficult to wheelie, I like the idea of it being hard to break, because this lad has the mechanical skill of Jivebastard and muggins here will get to fix it.
I have heard the odd tale of oil pump failure, can anyone confirm or deny? ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

Think they share the same 50/125/180 engine as the Gilera/Piaggio
And to the comment further up, Yeah single sided swingarm, like the Peugeot Speedfights. |

He knows what he wants and it seems a sensible buy, so what's the point in me interfering?
Besides, if I recommend something else and he buys one and it's a POS, I'll get the blame and never hear the last of it, so I say bollards, it's his money, let him spend it on what he wants. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

Hub steerer. A single sided swing-arm on a Speedfright is again a completely different proposition. Note on the picture of the Dragster where the front shock is positioned between the feet. |

So, he did what every kid does, found one, went to view and bought it, no messing about.
Luckily, he seems to have got a good'un, 11 years old, 2 owners and a totally believable 3200 on the clock.
He loves it enough that he went for a two hour ride after picking it up, despite having no waterproofs and it being precipitating down the whole way!
My first impressions are that it's extremely comfortable for a tiddler and the engine is super smooth, a proper little gem.
Lack of a main stand is a pain and I'm not sure about the tank mounted speedo, where you have to take your eye completely off the road to look at it; OK for someone experienced enough to know how fast they're going, not so good for a novice.
Certainly looks solid enough, I hope it proves to be so. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........
