Ello all.

Just finished spraying the rear panel on my bike, and while I've managed to get a good finish on it, it looks nothing like the panel on the other side. Anyone know how I can get a "polished" look on it? The other panels look as if they have some sort of lacquer on them making them shine nicely, so can I get a can of lacquer and just spray away? It's had about 8 coats now, been giving it really thin coats and building it up so it looks good spray-wise but I just want to know how I can get that shiny finish like on the other panels.

Cheers.

suppose you could rub down the other side and laquer it if you want it shinier.

I think........after you spray the paint......you must sand it down with water and 800 g sand paper....then spray a clear coat on it.....when you spray the clear.....it should be sprayed 15 min apart with 3 coats...... clear coat is like glue.....try not to spray too thin........it has to be sprayed thick....without any major drips.....minor drips can be fixed....ie. sanded down........if you spray the clear coat correctly.....youll have a very shiny finish.....without the orange peel...........

Yes you have to laquer it, and its a bastard to do!
You have to spray it thick enough so that it isnt speckled, and thin enough so that it doesnt run. i Recommend spraying indoors with no air movement, and from double the normal distance away. Keep finely dusting it not allowing the laquer chances to dry. this should help you to build up the thickness of the laquer without it running.

I sprayed a load of M1ke's panels for him such as the rear of his bike. The spray job was perfect! Then when it came time to laquer i gave it lots of thin coats, allowing each time to dry as you do with paint. The speckles just dried and built up on one another. the end result was so horrible we had to sand the panels down and start again. Sick

When you spray the clear, you dont spray it the same way you spray the paint....if you have spots, then you sprayed it too thin, or you are having overspray problems.....btw, if you are spraying the garage, water down the floor to reduce dust.

The Clear coat should be sprayed evenly, and not to thin, without over spraying.......its like glue......

So it's the same as spraying, just try not to get any runs? When spraying it I was doing it really really thin, leaving it for 20-30 minutes, then another thin coat and then sanding it down a touch with some 600 paper and then starting again until it looked OK.

It looks exactly the same as the rear panel on that ZXR Frosty at the moment, kind of a matt finish so I wanted to try and get it looking nice and shiny like the other side, because at the moment it stands out like a sore thumb when compared to the other panels. Anyway, cheers for the advice lads, I've got to get some xmas bits tomorrow so I'll go and get some lacquer while I'm out and give it a go.

Thumbs Up

Ah yes thats something else i should have mentioned, laquer can take up to a week to 100% set, so don't attempt to polish it untill then

My old man said give it a very light sand down with some 600 paper to remove the slightly mottled look that the spray has given it, and then rub it like mad with T-Cut to buff it up nice, but do you reckon this'll look as good as lacquering it?

600 paper isnt too fine...
I use 200/400/600 when sanding down plastic panel's

For sanding down laquer i think 600/800 for removing runs, but this will scratch the hell out of the laquer at the same time. Finish it off with 1200 grade or finer

Well, earlier I rubbed it down and gave it a try with some T-Cut and it did pretty much nothing. Going to get some fine sandpaper tomorrow and a can of lacquer and go mad on it till I'm happy with it.

When youve done the top coat, flat it back with 1200 wet and dry, then warm it with a hair drier, then apply about 6 thin coats of lacquer, allow 20 mins to dry between each coat.

Let the lacquer set for about 14 days, it will probably look shit, then get some 1500 wet and dry and flat it back just rub it once or twice over, then get some t cut or G3 on a damp cloth and polish it up.

It's chipped already, just from putting it down on a table it made a small ding in it. I'm thinking of sanding it down again and giving it a couple more coats since I T-Cutted it because I want to give it a good key when I start spraying lacquer on. I'm a fussy bastard as well so I want to make sure it looks spot on seeing as it's a brand new bike too.

Cheers people, Thumbs Up.

She is suggesting that you should leave the paint to fully harden for a few weeks, then T cut it. then if you wish to you can laquer over the fully hardend smoothed paint.

She didn't bother to get her's laquerd.

I would however strongly recommend laquer as it will give the finish you want/need for your perticular bike
