Yet scream again when they don't.

Plenty of people benefit from auto renewals.... Maybe you one year when one of these people hit you.
Rather they failed to remember to renew and be on the road uninsured?

Funny that given the number of polices renewed each year the number that complain about auto renewal is very low.
Tends to be the ones who open and never read letters as well. Or when checking emails fail to check the SPAM/JUNK folders Laughing

I wonder over the last 100 years without autorenewal...how many people have accidentally forgotten to renew their policy and then gone on to have an at fault claim against someone with tpo or tpft insurance? ...bet its less than the number of people who dont like auto renewing.

But why isn't it a benefit to me to not have to lift a finger to renew the policy?

If that were the case with the motor policy I renewed today, I wouldn't have had to take the phone call whilst I was busily trying to scoff breakfast; it would have just been taken care of for me.

I don't see that as such a terrible thing, IMO.

What's bad about auto-renew is when things don't go the way they should. That is to say:
1) You don't receive the renewal reminder
2) You've not set any reminder for yourself
3) Your memory is garbage
4) You don't check your documents very often if at all
5) You don't even remember where your documents are
6) You've auto-blocked their auto-renew with some spam filters or something
7) You received the renewal reminder but just decided you'd deal with that one 'later' and 'later' never came.

OR - if it's not a combination of 1-6 and actually just number 7 then hissy fits are thrown about it being evil.

For the record - I still don't like auto-renew but it's hardly the scourge of the modern world.

"Apparently", it's law now that they have to auto renew unless instructed by the policy holder not too.

Something to do with the vehicle going uninsured if yada yada something something forget.

Well we both know that it's to embezzle monies that they would not get ordinarily as one would shop around....but that's just what they said.

Nope..not true.

...I called the banks help line when I noticed my 'available balance' was £200 lower than expected (lloyds) and they couldnt help other than to stop the insurer taking any more money!!..they advised me to go into my local branch with the details...I went in to my local branch and they initially said they couldnt reverse the payment as it had been debited from my card but hadnt actually shown on my account as being taken from my balance yet....and I was advised to wait for it to show as taken off my balance (even though they confirmed it had been taken by card on the morning) before getting the bank to reverse it.

I kicked up a stink in the branch and she eventually agreed with the manager to refund me to my balance in the agreement that should the insurer refund me the money I would have to pay back the bank.

All in all a total ballache and a waste of a saturday morning just because the insurer conveniently forgot to update my details to say I didnt want to renew.

Sorry to disagree with you.....

Irrelevant I know...but I used to work in motor Insurance for 15 years. .so youd think id be defending the Insurers...but this autorenew crap is set up for the benefit of the insurance company NOT the paying punter.

See list about, points 1-7. The cancellation fee would still work out better than 6 points and a £200 fine because you've ridden off without insurance.

The other issue with this is, Last years policy £300, renewal £350, shop around and see your existing company quoting £280.

Auto renewal doesn't stop you getting royally fucked over and paying more than you should.

We need to stop having this shit 'for your own benefit, honest, to stop you getting prosecuted' If someone is too stupid to renew insurance then that's their problem, don't force their stupidity on me with a solution to a problem I don't have.

We will just have to beg to differ I guess.

You believe Autorenewal is set up with the sole purpose of helping the customer and not in any way set up by insurers for their own benefit. I believe its set up for the SOLE benefit of the insurers.

Heres an idea that would make me believe your theory..and that is, when we set up an insurance policy....we get ASKED if we would like to 'opt into' the Autorenewal scheme...therefore we get the choice.

Then and only then would I believe the scheme is set up to benefit the customer and not the other way round.

No, I didn't say it's for the SOLE PURPOSE of helping the customer. I just demonstrated that, had I have had an auto-renew policy on the motor policy I renewed today it would have done me a favour, therefore it cannot be for the SOLE benefit of the insurer because I would have seen some benefit from it and I'm the consumer. It would appear you're confusing what's of benefit to YOU versus what's of benefit to the several thousand other consumers and policy holders that will be on any given insurer's books.

Personally, if I were that fussed - I'd opt with my feet and just not take the policy up. Get the full documented quotation out by post, check it carefully, THEN take out insurance cover.

And again, I'm really not a fan of it. I wish it wasn't an option at all and then we could go back to the 'bloody insurance companies didn't tell me my policy was due for renewal' threads instead.

True. Until it has fully debited, nothing can be done.
Reversal of a auth is dangerous ground.

Possibly an excess of paranoia on my part, but when I'm on to them and they say "So, you want to cancel then?" I fire in with "No, I didn't say that. I don't want a new policy after the current one expires at the end of the term."

To my great surprise, Admiral's auto-renew last year came up as the cheapest car policy for me, and exactly the same as their new quote price, even when I got quotes through a couple of comparison sites.

I still called them up and told them not to auto-renew, then took out a new policy with Elephant (same group, same price), just on principle though.
