So what's this white gunk on my chain and what do I do with

Been off the bike for about a week and parked it up and left it
Came back to it on sat to find the chain with spots of rust and quite stiff so I lubed it until it wasn't stiff.

Came to use it today, stiff chain and a white waxy coating in places, lubed it again and rode to work.


Everything seems to be fine, but what's the white stuff?

What lube are you using. Some of them congeal into crud like that if you apply it cold and don't run it afterwards.

I was going to say salt dust would be the obvious one but it reads as if you didn't take it out before the white stuff appeared

Using muck-off which claims it doesn't do the white gunky thing.

It does live in the garden.

Bike is used on mainly motorways so salt deposits and road spray does end up all over the bike, have started rinsing with cold water when I get home but try and avoid the chain a bit.

Probably just white rust in that case then as it starts appearing on galvanised parts of the chain.

Give it a light scrub with a kitchen scourer or similar that usually gets the dust off, then recoat it after a dry run onto the chain when its warm.

Once it starts going brown its more of a cunt to get off

Probably going to do chain and sprocket replacement in march after they've stopped gritting the roads as I don't know how long it's been on the bike.

The white gunk has moved from my chain to the left side of my tyre as I found out turning left this morning.

Thankfully stayed up, just need to clean it off before heading home

Just wipe it off away from the centre and take it steady?
