But I do that (in the car - it's the opposite logic to biking), I stick to my rules and ignore anyone, including pedestrians, who are in the wrong. I do take evasive action at the very last second but up until that point I hold firm in the hope that the wrong-doer will realise and sort themselves out.

But I'm obeying the rules. If someone's not and they get taken out by someone who is that's their fault, not the person who was doing the right thing and minding their own business.
Maybe I am wrong and it's something to do with this.

I do have self preservation, there was a guy pulled out on me from a parked position a while ago, his insurance paid out with no question, but I slammed on my brakes and did all I could to avoid him - I think because it was at the last instant that I noticed so I had a split second to think about it.
I also had a very near miss recently, going right at a roundabout when the car coming from straight on just carried on - I saw him coming, could tell he wasn't noticing my indicator (weird 6th sense) but I continued anyway, I did the manoeuvre and slammed on at the very last moment - he did as well once he realised he was a twat. Bloke in the garage I was turning into said it was the closest he's ever seen and it happens every day.

So that last one is what I mean, I had plenty of time and knew full well what was happening, but fuck him if he didn't notice my turning I'm going to carry on (until the last moment possible, it was a courtesy car I was driving after all, bloody expensive excess) and learn him that he's ballsed up.

I'm sorry but you are asking to be mowed down with that type of attitude. I've ridden for the first time in nearly 2 months today, 1st time back on one have noticed loads of people just not really concentrating and acted accordingly, I didn't speed, I steered clear of all people that swayed in lanes, were yawning, not pulling over to let people pass etc.

You basically just said yourself "I know I was putting myself in trouble, but fuck it, insurance"
