One of my friends who works at HG has said he has been told they're going into administration.. again.

Website 'down for maintenance' too.

https://www.hein-gericke.co.uk/

Just a pre-warning - there may be some sales again (not that there were massive discounts last time, but still). Don't shoot the messenger.

It's true enough. Looks like somebody called in a 1.2 million euro loan and finally killed them off.

Translated from a German news site:

"...Hein Gericke Germany GmbH added on 16/12/2013 with the District Court Dusseldorf apply for the opening of a preliminary insolvency proceedings. The English subsidiary of Hein Gericke Group has filed for insolvency."

Last time it was just the British part. Now it's Hein Gericke Europe. This is bad.

Doesnt surprise me to be honest. As much as their stuff is good, and I will say it is good. I have a pair of summer gloves from them and they have been work constantly for the last 2 years and still in perfect condition. Its massively over priced. I got my gloves on offer and they still set me back £50 where an AS or other popular brand summer glove costs much less for the same style.

I've used the Maidstone branch recently and every time I go in it feels like an 80's marketstall, goods behind the counter in packets that have faded and yellowed with age, tank bags so well used they look tatty (from being open and people trying them out)

Staff members without uniforms looking like they are customers.

Helmet displays with dirty dusty shelves, just wasn't impressed enough to part with my money,

Sorry, for my money I'm looking for a discount, to try it on, to be served in a nice clean environment. That's just the way shops need to be.

Not all of their stuff is overpriced, but yeah some is.
Real shame if they disappear completely as I really like some of the kit (hiprotec armour with the little bobbles) and keep promising myself that one day I'll get those sheltex leathers. The only other water proof leathers I've seen are the Rukka ones which look even more awesome, but then I had to check several websites just to confirm that yes, they really do cost that much.

I was half expecting the administration as I've been getting loads of offer emails in the last two months, really pushing the vouchers as well - I feel sorry for anyone who's bought them as Christmas presents.

I have a waterproof HG leather jacket from them that has lasted me a good 3 years, and still waterproof after washing with their Nikwax wash and proofing spray. It was about £120 in a sale too so happy with that.

My Alpinestars polar GTX gloves are also still lasting well after nearly 4 years and still waterproof, for about £90.

I think the only thing I ever paid full whack for was my £450 Shoei, but I was flush from an insurance payout then.

Apart from that I mainly buy when I can get good discounts too, and will probably get a full waterproof textile outfit when the prices are right.

Shame as I'm friends with about 4 guys that work in there and usually just hang out having a laugh if I've got a bit of time. Hope they stay up again Thumbs Up

This is a shame and I hope they survive. They only recently re-opened the Leeds store.

I like HG stuff. It just sort of works. Also made for the European market means sizes are reasonable. You don't have to guess as would appear the case for some generic sell anywhere far-eastern made stuff.

Sad

I used to think expensive but then got in the habit of buying in their (almost constant) sales.

When compared to the J&S owned Frank Thomas stuff the HG stuff is far better, lasts longer and IMHO worth the extra initial extra just because I don't need to replace every year or so. This is maybe why they're having problems, not enough repeat business. So maybe why J&S is still in business and Frank Thomas stuff sells as well because it's always about to wear out.

I don't think HG is overpriced really, certainly not on there own brand stuff, it is good quality. The HG Lobster gloves are the best thing in winter and are only£40-50 IIRC. Thumbs Up

Indeed, I'm happy to get their own branded gear if it works! Thumbs Up

To be fair, the Maidstone one is ghetto. I stopped going in there for clothing after I found a fingernail clipping in a glove Laughing

Shocking of them not to hoover out the inside of all their gloves every day! Laughing

Hein Gericke owe the company I work for a lot of money dating back to the last time they went down. We got a lot of business from them - going to be a bit less to do at work for a while now. Sad

There's a lovely bike shop just up Luton RD in Chatham that offers a 10% discount to BCF members Whistle

Although i've gotta admit, the parts counter is a royal mess.

I get a 10% discount in J&S near me. Instructors privilege.

Update.

Just been informed by my friend that the HG shop near me (Gants Hill) is now Closed, and currently not trading.

So could this mean no closing sale?! Shocked

Depends upon the administrators and what they decide to do. Maybe online sale of remaining stock or consolidate it all at one store and sell from there.

I think a lot of stuff will come back to us at work (Ox Prods). Alex George closed down recently, and we got all the kit back to process. Most went back to our stock - still working on that one now, and that was just one outlet.
(So actually, I could end up being VERY busy for a while, before it's all done with).

Good point, I do want to try it on, but the items do need to be 'managed' so they don't look skanky.
