Must be quite a few people struggling for Christmas this year as I've seen some pretty cheap bikes going in the last couple of weeks. A taxed and tested zx9-r for £800 last week and now this SRAD for £700 in Oxford would now be mine if it wasn't 2 hours away to collect.

Agreed, seeing lots of bargains around. Wish I had the spare cash to exploit the situation. 2 hours away? Christ, if you really wanted it, surely you'd be over there like a shot?!
I've spent the best part of 24 hours on a trip to Guernsey to collect a bike I bought, and the latest one entailed a train from Oxford to Leicester. 2 hours is nothing!

Picked up a GPz305 for £45 today. No reason to have bought it except it was cheap and still runs. These bikes a shite in my experience. Fragile motor. And this one has done over 50,000 miles. Which means it's probably not got much original engine left Laughing

But I can't resist cheap and cheerful crap like this. I just enjoy having bikes. Taking bits off them. Putting them back on again, maybe a bit more painted or polished.

Still hoping for a nice classic era MZ before Xmas. But I doubt that's going to happen Neutral

Feel free to post some more bargains from round here Pete (Essex / Kent) as struggling to see the bikes through the shite being advertised on eBay at the moment.

An 1990 ETZ251 the right kind of classic? UnspeedySam has one that's currently blocking my YammaGamma in the shed. Also, bargain spotless YammaGamma for £1400 that I picked up a couple of weeks ago.

I have the pain of seeing the bikes I could of afforded but cant now as I have just had to buy another car and have some repairs done on the house Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Saw a little gsx 250 at a reasonable price and thought to myself ? Hmmm? a replacement for the Superdream?, THEN Evil or Very Mad my old car decided it had had enough and was going to go no more.
So all my cash for a new toy went on something sensible Crying or Very sad

I'm going to look at this at the weekend, hopefully. Ad says project, but it doesn't look like it is? A good tyre-kicking should educate me further.

Mine was free.

I still hated it. It ran fine. The one time I took it to the MOT it worked superb. Rode to work 1 day, some rubber in the carbs shit itself, it started to misfire and shit.

Limped to work, left for home after 8 hours, superb ride home. Wouldn't start the next day.

I'd rather buy chinese.

Bandit 400's are a pain but once you get em setup right they can be fun. You need to take your time and go through everything on em

They do have problems but only if not looked after really. Things I have found are

Carbs must be setup right ie all diaphragms float valves float heights and balanced properly. Also run standard air box and filter.

Valve clearances must be spot on

Plugs and caps should he the non resistant type and coils leads must be good too.

Also now they are getting on a bit Ive seen a few with rotten out tanks

Getting parts for the carbs is easy provided you either:

A) Can speak Japanese

or

B) Know the right places to look Wink

They're ok, just so long as you're prepared to spend more time maintaining it then riding it. Carb rebuilds will be required fairly frequently (budget for 1 a year) and valves need doing every couple of thousand miles (at least they're not shims, well unless you buy the variable valve head).

Honestly? For a first bike, just buy something else. They're getting a bit long in the tooth and nobody is going to get passionate or sentimental about a Bandit 400. Get a 600 and live with it for a year, then move on to something better. 400's tend to be a lot of hassle.

Exactly that sort of classic. Only problem is I currently have no further room in the garage. That fecking Vespa has got to go in the new year. As has the ugly mountain of rusty old bits.
