DayZ had started off as a survival game but soon turned into a pvp shoot em up.

The SA has pushed it back to survival, the thing that made it so good to begin with.

If people like this (survivaly stuff) they should consider the S.T.A.L.K.E.R series. No zombies (well only a few), but seems similar based on observations. One of the best games around and makes all other FPS's seem soo linear.

Doesn't help a great deal at 1st, but have this map here : https://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/dayz.gamepedia.com/8/8a/ChernarusPlus.jpg open so you can ALT-TAB to it and try to figure where you are.

Clouds run west to east (so you can tell which way is north).

Keep stocked up on food, fill water bottles at wells etc, you can take off your shirt and rip it up for bandages...

An axe is the best melee weapon (so if you find one dump the baseball bat or crowbar).

It's hard going at 1st, but you start getting used to it.

Until you know where you are in the map, no-one else will be able to arrange to meet up unfortunately (so figure out where you are and/or what is near you and take it from there).

Basic rule of thumbs are:

If you run inland from the coast and the railway is before the road, you are on the south of Chernarus. In most cases, follow the railway with the ocean on your right to get to the nearest township.

Alternatively, if you hit the road before the railway, you are on the east coast. The biggest towns near you are Berezino to the north and Elektrozavodsk to the south. Don't go south. Head north, ransack Berezino, then use the map to navigate your way to the NE airfield. Not as much military loot as the NW, but it sees less traffic too, so you might find you can kit yourself out fairly easily.

Steer clear of everyone, unless you are absolutely sure of them. Trust no one.

Edit: if its night time, the stars are accurate enough for night time navigation. If you can find your way around the night sky, you can find directions in DayZ. Same story with the in-game watch and finding north during the day. It's pretty satisfying to step off the road at Kamenka and arrive at Stary Sobor with just a watch and a memory to guide you.

I should have been more clear- console and mainstream PC FPS's feel linear. Far cry 3 was good, don't get me wrong. Stalker was the last game I could play before I got a mac, and I'm sure I'd enjoy arma.
