Hello everyone!
I'm Waleed from Pakistan and this is my first post on BCF. i've been going through BCF for a while but only as a visitor so finally decided to make an account.
I currently dont own any bike atm BUT, im building a buggy using a yamaha heart i-e a yamaha rd350 engine. i am basically a noob when it comes to bikes so im beginning to use the platform of BCF to learn about the engine i got..
There are a couple of problems im having with the engine which i'd really appreciate u guys to help me with. I bought the engine in used condition from one of our local markets. It came complete with the radiator, carbs, rectifier (which i lost), and a coil which doesnt work apparently. However i did not get the electrical unit with it and am unable to find one, are there any alternatives which could be used for the unit?
Now for the major problem i am facing, since the engine is to used in a road buggy it has to be a self start motor (starts at the turn of the key), how can i convert it to a self start engine? Is there any sort of kit or any sort or part that could be added/modified to make it a self start engine.
Being a noob, i have no idea of the carburetor settings and which pipe goes where. There are over 3 nozzles on each carb and i dont know what goes to each nozzle.. I'll upload a refernce pic from the internet and label each nozzel then u can guide me what goes where.
All the electricals are a mess, will be needing guidance with that too.
I have more queries and have much to learn from you guys, any sort of help would be appreciated.
And guys, please use simple basic noob language as im not aware of the techinical terms.

I know, but didnt have a lot of options, and this is the best deal i was getting keeping my budget in mind.  |

Hi
Not going to be easy to convert it to electric start. Cheapest way would probably be something similar to that used on the old Aprilia AF1s. Basically a starter motor bolted to the bottom of the engine with a chuck that flies out when the starter it used, with a gear engaging on a toothed wheel on the outside of the flywheel. On the early AF1 using the Rotax 127 engine these are pretty much a bolt on to the non electric start basic engine. However while you might be able to use this idea I don't think any of the Aprilia components would be usable.
As to the engine, exactly what model is it? Think the coil should be fairly easy to replace, but you will likely need the electronic ignition module and the power valve control unit. There are after market ignition units and I presume after market power valve control units (and possibly units which combine both functions.
As to the carbs, again there are different versions. Might be connections for the oil pump pipes, fuel feed, over flow pipes and a balance pipe between the 2 carbs.

I doubt you'll be able to convert it to electric start, unless the Yamaha Banshee quad was electric start (it has a YPVS engine).
It sounds like you're missing the CDI unit (The electronic ignition box). That's one of the hardest parts to source. It might be best if you sell this engine and buy one that a) isn't as rare and b) has electric start and all of the parts you need.
You'll also need to make sure the exhaust shape stays broadly the same or you'll have no performance to speak of. Quite a lot of the performance of a two stroke engine comes from the design of it's exhaust. You can't just chop them and bend them, you have to keep the cone shape and volume the same. This will be next to impossible without computer modelling unless you're going to keep the exhaust the original shape which won't work with a buggy.
